Ty Rodgers to take redshirt year

#426
I appreciate Ty but let's dont act as if he has lived up to expectations. Ty is not a lock down defender or an uber skilled player like a Rodman type in all areas besides shooting. I trust our coaches to evaluate the talent. I am not so easily convinced Ty is better than Tre White at any aspect until I see more on the court at Illinois. I know LaTulip says they are very similar in many areas except shooting the ball where Tre is better. I tend to agree with Latulip. Ty struggled on defense at times too. Ty was a very good offensive rebounder but I have not seen enough yet to say Tre or others can't be to and also provide a threat to score and spread the floor which Ty unfortunately just can't do.
I haven't seen anything from Tre White yet that Ty Rodgers couldn't do. Maybe he will flash in games but he's likely the 6th or 7th option in terms of scoring. Will Riley might be coming for his spot if he learns how to defend. At this point, you got KJ, Riley, Ivisic, Boswell, DGL, maybe Humrichous who are all going to be getting the ball. So, is it really worth alienating Ty Rodgers for a guy who won't even be a top 5 option on his own team?

510 I don't think you are convincing anyone. I get you like TR, I do too, we all like TR. But he is the one in practice going up against his teammates every single day, and he made this decision based on what he knows, and what the staff is telling him they see. I get the sense from your multitude of posts on Ty Rogers decision that you think this was not his decision to make. You are wrong, it was. Had he told the staff he still wanted to play, use the year of eligibility, they would let him. They likely may have recommended otherwise, because I think this staff is brutally honest with all of the players, but still would have said sitting out was his best long term option.

If this is true, Anderson way overplayed his hand. He was making more than any Bill Self Assistant is making at KU. And he wanted a raise...completely unreasonable.
Also highlights another reason for Ty's redshirt and probable transfer with "his guy" leaving.

Any idea what he's getting paid this year? Thought I saw $300k. Still don't understand how 2 parties make a deal/ commitment, and then 1 party decides..." Naw, I'm not going to play this year. But still pay me my $$". This seems very unethical. Sky, Sincere, Ty...who will it be next year?
Agree, if you don't want to be here and be an active part of the team,,,,leave. But to suck up a roster space, train, get paid just doesn't seem right. Hopefully the NIL stuff gets a few rules, contracts something. Been illini since the 60s, miss the loyalty of the old days

The man spitting the truth to set the rumors straight, nothing we didn’t know before….
This is a case of foolish pride by TA - I can understand why there would be jealousy of someone coming in and making more than you.

But you need perspective in those situations and know if you get to that level of recruiting success your payday is coming - Josh isn’t going to let an assistant leave that they really want to keep because of money

Most Illinois thing would be Tim Anderson, pissed after feeling like he was passed over himself, felt this Ty being relegated to the bench and redshirting situation was the last straw and brings 1000pages of personal "notes" copied in triplicate to the University Chancellor, B10 commissioner, and NCAA president detailing multiple violations including an off book account for player and recruiting tampering related expenditures, payment to Texas Tech to nor allow TSJ to get his additional summer credits he needed for Michigan, documentation of the coaching staff bribing medical to clear a concussed Andre Curbelo, audio that Kasparas and Tomi were bought European supercars to attend here, and damning evidence that both Juwan Howard and Connor Stallions were actually university of Illinois paid plants in a convoluted murder for hire plot to destroy the crown jewel of the B10 and NCAA Michigan athletic program.

Ty files for a special waiver for immediately eligible transfer which the NCAA surprisingly immediately allows. He enrolls at MSU who just so happens to be our next opponent and Izzo starts him against us. Ty plays like a man possessed, physically abusing KJ and Will turning them over at will, no fouls called. We somehow claw our way back but with 5 seconds to go up 3, Ty jumps over Tre White for the offensive rebound, takes it straight into Ivisic for the and 1, buries the free throw, then steals the inbound pass, takes the buzzer beater 3 and buries it. We proceed to lose to MSU 3 additional times that year, once more in the regular season, once in the BTT where Ty gets a quadruple double, and the finally in the NCAAT in the 2nd Round where Ty goes for 40pts. MSU goes on to win the national championship with Ty named MVP

In the offseason, due to review of the violations, the NCAA rules that there is an extreme lack of institutional control and as such they invoke a new NCAA Illinois rule death penalty in which all school athletic programs are stripped from the university never to return. Due to the lack of funding and lack of state and government support, U of I closes its doors and Northwestern becomes the flagship state university, and all degrees earned at Illinois become worthless. That about cover it?
Damn, you have put a lot of thought into that 😳

Ty is an independent contractor (like all players). I absolutely loved the way he plays, and he is an Every Day Guy.

He got pissed off at the boss when his supervisor left and see there is little opportunity.
So, right now he is "quiet quitting" or "put in his 2 weeks notice" as he is looking for his next job.
He will leave and go somewhere and be a great EDG for that team, and if he gets a chance to play us he'll have his best game.

I think we've all been there.

Good luck Ty, go to the SEC - maybe WV

1. It's not like they have someone they could give his roster spot to if he were to leave right now. Even if there were, there is already one scholarship spot left open, just in case. Him continuing to take up a roster spot does not hurt the team.

2. Him training with the team is not only good for him, it's good for the team.

3. The rules are clear that NIL can not be pay-for-play. If he were to stop getting his NIL, that would look like pay-for-play, and could be dicey territory for the program. Do I wish his $300k or whatever could instead be allocated towards getting a top transfer next season? Of course. But that's not how it works and that $300k lost is just the cost of doing business at this point.

Redshirts should be more restrictive (i.e., health or hardship related).
This would be a terrible idea, particularly in football where players are redshirted all the time because they just aren't ready to be on the field yet. Even in basketball, it would end the days of guys like Jakstys coming to a program like ours if they'd have to burn a year of eligibility knowing they won't see the court.

Redshirts are already restricted in that you only get one (barring subsequent medical or hardship). There's no reason to make it more restrictive than that.

You could in theory limit it to Freshman and sophomores if you want to try to prevent the NIL impacts of guys like Ty Redshirting.

Ty Rodgers has better efficiency ratings on both sides of the ball than Tre White. The point was made by another poster a few pages ago. So, I'd contend that having him in a more prominent role would not lessen the efficiency of the team as a whole. If you contend otherwise, then back it up with stats to prove Tre White is a more efficient "overall" player than Ty Rodgers
The die was cast when Brad signed Tre White. If he had intended to utilize Rodgers to any great extent this year, he would have passed on White. No one knows who's better, no one will ever know definitively. What we do know is what Brad thinks. Good enough for me.

No one was "alienated". Ty himself saw that he won't be able to crack the rotation to the point where he could get his desired playing time... and therefore (and most of all) HE made a decision for HIMSELF.

Like, my goodness... your non-stop paragraph long posts this whole 18 page thread...

I can name something! Shooting the basketball.
I think 510 implies that we want to see MAKING of shots. And that's really the most important part of the shot.... Anyone one can just take em!
Kidding and stats aside, my primary concern has been that I've not been impressed based on eye test for a couple guys at the 3/4. Granted it's a very limited sample size, but when someone has a blah game, I want to at least see some signs. Didn't expect Hum-dog to be a great athlete, but it's actually been a little worse than I had imagined (skill is apparent, release looks good even if they aren't going in yet; solid catch/finish in traffic the other night). CB obviously a freak but it's not looked very fluid - crosses his feet and swings his arms like Pete Townsend when moving laterally. TW looks kinda beach muscly or something; not known for being explosive but on an obvious lower tier athletically compared to Ty; the basketball has not compensated to date, IMO (again, small sample size).
Think Ty just didn't get comfortable with the appropriate decisions on the offensive side. Was trying to force dribble hand-offs and paint touches that just weren't there in that exhibition. Needs to reset and just play ball again. Maybe take an ayahuasca retreat.

Not an insider, but I think it's as simple as Ty was asked to put in the work on his shot and get to where he could still space the floor with this group. Ty brings a lot --physical, great defender, great rebounder, great character. But, it seems that without more shooting, he doesn't fit well in this offense. And I seriously doubt they planned for failure. So he worked on his shot but now they're at a juncture where the thing that's in his best interest is probably to move on. Sucks in a lot of ways, but at this level of competition when things don't work out you make changes.

Who does CB swing his arms like?

I have seen a lot of comparisons between Tre White and Ty Rodgers and that it was one or the other and I dont think that is the case, especially when you look at how this team was built.

4/1/24 Jake Davis commits
4/9/24 Tre White commits
4/14/24 Kylan Boswell commits
4/16/24 Carey Booth commits
4/30/24 Ben Humrichous commits
5/6/24 Tomislav Ivisic commits
5/28/24 Kasparas Jakucionis commits
6/23/24 Will Riely commits

It's easy to look back in hindsight, but at the time Tre White committed, there was no idea how this team would come together. I mean there is no way Brad knew what the team would look like the next year. I would say that up until KJ and Will came on board, there was still plenty of minutes for both Tre and Ty. As much as we appreciate Ty, I don't think there is anyone saying they would rather have Ty than either one of KJ or Will.

It's unfortunate for Ty that it worked out this way and I wish him the best in his future endeavors.

100% on all points.

"cost of business" - spot on. all NIL is sunk cost.

one final thought: big boy recruiting frequently results in collateral damage. it definitely did in this case. that said, if I could run it back, I'd very happily take each of our adds
