The original plan, made by AD Ron Guenther in 2011, was for Illinois to open this season Week 1 on the road at Western Michigan. The Mike Thomas regime adjusted this game to its current alignment.

O-line should have a better time opening routes for Vaughn and Foster. Coaching staff rides this to take the ball out of Lunt's hands and we pull away in the 3rd quarter.

WMU -1.5, mortgage your house on WMU, and don't believe one word about the narrative that emerges after we lose. This is just the rottenest possible scheduling luck. WMU is not a MAC team.

WMU is a good team but they aren't on same planet with one we saw tonight. Their Northwestern victory is looking uninspiring at best now.

No chance I'd bet WMU at -1.5 on the road. This is a game where our D-Line may completely control

Not gonna happen.

Unless WMU has 2 cornerbacks who will play on Sundays.......

Their win over Party Fitzgeralds kitty cats looking unimpressive after ISU did same thing.

We can be happy that NW didn't beat 3 pasties in row and got ranked before they cratered like they've done recently and for that I thank WMU but now it's time to crush WMU.

Man, I enjoy most of your posts. But when you slip into Captain Bombast mode, you crazy. Not saying we'll win, but it's certainly not close to as clear as you suggest.

I am expecting to see this team play good football, correct the silly penalties and get some turnovers. I expect Lunt to bounce back and have a solid game, as well. Illini pull away in the 4th quarter for the win 45-31. :shield:

Hopefully he doesn't take the ball out of his own hands, like he did yesterday...:tsk:

Looks like the line opened at Illinois -1 and has already blown up to WMU -3.5

Here's all I'm saying: Do not think of WMU as a MAC school. Get that association completely out of your head before, during, and especially after this game. Their talent level does not even bear a passing resemblance with even very good MAC teams of the past.

Think of it like, say, Temple or Cincinnati were coming to town. That's a better heuristic.

Or how about when NIU was the best D1 football program in the state of Illinois? And best of all it's a MAC school.

That was a really deep, experienced, well coached team. Not even on the same radar screen talent-wise.

"MAC" means something. This WMU team is not that thing, period, end of story. This is an AAC or Mountain West team, and a good one.

(You might also compare them to a gutter Power Five team in terms of talent, but those teams usually aren't as experienced in a system as these guys are. They'd beat the hell of of Kansas.)

They beat a garbage NU team by 1 point that lost to an FCS team. Let's keep things in perspective. They are a MAC team.

Regardless, they area going to have no fear whatsoever. If decide to run the same disjointed, deer-in-headlights offense that we ran against North Carolina, then we will be in trouble. They will smell that hesitancy and shake us like a ragdoll.

You are correct Illinois opened as a 1 point chalk at home.

Now the line is Illinois getting 3.5 points as a home dog. Crazy point swing.

What is moving this line? Do the WMU bettors know something we don't?

My guess is those WM backers early on are just betting on a streak discounting who they are about to play.

Give me all the points you want in this game- In fact I would be willing to give up 6.

Illinois is battle tested coming off NC and should cover this spread easily.

This is my College Game of the Week pick

Western Michigan may have the best recruiting classes in the MAC, but the best MAC recruiting is still worse than bad B1G recruiting (and we've been near bottom in the B1G). According to Rivals for the past 4 years:

2016 - Illinois: 68, WMich: 64
2015 - Illinois: 48, WMich: 78
2014 - Illinois: 72, WMich: 62
2013 - Illinois: 48, WMich > 100

I've lost enough money to Vegas to know that I'm not better than their models, but no way do I "bet the house" on WMich giving points. Gotta believe that Wes comes through, like W Kentucky last year, and Ke'Shawn finally breaks through with a 100 yard game as we work to keep the WMich offense off the field. Don't expect us to dominate, but I think we pull it out by a touchdown or so.

The line is how I expected it to go. Most early betters saw the Illinois game Saturday night and went in heavy on WMU. The line will start to swing back toward pick em by the end of the week. Especially with Illinois getting 3.5 points.

I don't know what to think about this game until we know what's up with Megginson and Day. Any updates there? Two positions we could not afford injuries in...

From what I'm seeing on twitter, both are listed on the depth chart for WMU, with Megginson starting.

WMU must have had a great AD at the time if they were scheduled to host us this year and they hosted MSU last year. Also yes please stop scheduling them.

Since this is our guys' third game in the new system, I expect us to improve every game just by knowing the system better than the previous week. Less thinking, more instincts. But still, this is only game 3 vs. a really good football team.

We can win, but the Defense will have to be sound and the O line needs to maul. I've been looking forward to this game since we hired Lovie. Anxious to see where we're at in week 3 against a quality opponent that's on a similar level as us.

I expect we will win and Lunt will have a strong showing (as he usually does against the "little" guys), but I'm mostly concerned with what happens after this. If we can pull off a W in Lincoln I'll be thrilled, but Lunt often struggles under pressure. We have the coaching staff, now we need the talent...

Lovie Smith press conference
https://twitter.com/JWernerScout

Lovie: "It's a lot harder coming here after a loss than a win. But there's a lot of football left."

Lovie breaks the seson into quarters. We still have the chance to go 2-1 in the first quarter.

Lovie: Didn't play well enough to win but we'll learn from the win. We already have.

Lovie: WMU is a good football team. We knew this will be a game to truly measure how far we've come

Lovie: Won't be talking about injuries early in the week.

Lovie: We'll move on from that game. We learned an awful lot

Lovie: WMU has an offensive system they believe in. And they run it well. Run some option. Have a good RB, great WR and special OL

Lovie: We don't need a lot of motivation. lost last week. That's motivation enough. I don't see Ui being underdogs to many at home

Lovie: A loss is a loss. NFL losses feel a certain way. College losses feel the same way.

Lovie: More disappointed in the loss after watching the video. After a loss, you can't wait to get back on the practice field

Lovie: Some of the things we saw in the game we haven't seen in practice. Now that we have, we can make those corrections.

Lovie: Not going to scrap what we're doing or our players or coaches.

Lovie on fixing penalties: You identify it and correct it. The ones after the play have to be avoided, we won't put up with it.

Lovie: I've liked Carroll Phillips since he's been here. He's a legit outside pass rusher. Like all of us, he'd like few plays back

Lovie: We'd like to finish the game strong, more than anything.

Lovie: Would like to have OL stay together, get chemistry. But I've never seen it happen. You have to adjust.

Lovie: OL has "done OK." Our team is 1-1. Says you've done things well but not perfectly. Anxious to see the next step.

Lovie: We didn't tackle well at times and didn't keep WRs in front of us well enough.

Lovie: We put a big emphasis like everyone on getting off the field on 3rd down. Have to stop teams on 3rd and long. Disappointed.

Lovie: Not a good thing to turn the ball over and not to take the ball away.

Lovie: Lunt will bounce back. I was critical of myself. Everyone should have been not happy about their play. Wes is a part of that.

Lovie: Our fans were great. We saw it. That just kind of shows you what it will be like here in coming weeks and years.

Lovie: We should have a bad, terrible feeling deep down inside until we play the game next week. That's a good thing. Motivation.
