I would think rain would be a detriment to us. Our run game hasn’t been the strongest and PSU doesn’t go pass crazy anyway.

Luke and his WR crew are a strong point for the team. So is our pass blocking with our transfer tackles.

I’d rather see a game where we CAN pass than one we can’t. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I agree with you- it really depends on the conditions- if it’s a mud pit and windy and throwing isn’t an option I don’t like our chances. If it’s just wet but not windy - then throwing might even be easier, I’ve played on fields like that and it makes it really hard to cover someone- the WR can plan their cuts, the DB has to react and if it’s slippery it makes it hard to stay with them

Hopefully we are well prepared for the rain in any case and have a good game plan

I hope a slippery field will make it harder for them to defend the pass. The old, "we know where we're going, they don't" notion.

that Henson Hall beat me to, and expressed better.

Penn St & Purdue are the two premier turf grass land grant schools - known nationwide for it . Hence both have grass fields
And long may it continue.

I officiate soccer, and I’m seriously considering stepping away because I do so many games on turf and it kills everything below my sternum after doing a couple of games.

it kills me that we don’t gave grass

U of I used to have turf grass discipline within Agronomy , but closed it some years back

it would be better for us if we played on grass , all things considered . we don’t share the field with anyone or any other sport

I' trying to wrap my head around how people think a 19 point victory is likely... then I saw a video where someone was predicting scores for this weekend and had 38-17 Penn State and realized that I could actually see that happening...

I don't think it will, but it's not out of realm of possibility.

Head pick: PSU 30-Ill 21
Heart Pick: ILL 28-PSU24
Completely agree! A win is going to be tough but there are few situations where a 19 point spread should be given against a ranked team (e.g. Starting QB goes down or suspensions). Cant wait to put some money down once I land in PA.

There is typically one game after which you know your team is going to be something special.

Last year when we blew out Final 4 participant Florida Atlantic at MSG with Marcus and TSJ both scoring 33 points we got a feel for the upside on the team.

This game at Penn State is similar opportunity. It will not ruin the season if we lose. But if we can beat a top ten blue blood on the road then we can start talking about B10 title contender.

The Illini have met every challenge this season. Easy wins over EIU, Central Michigan. Good wins over Kansas at home and Nebraska on road. This is a good but not great PSU team. Struggled to beat Bowling Green, Blew out Kent State and W Virginia. At this point our resume is equal. If our defense is real, our OL can give Luke time throw, we minimize turnovers and we leverage our great wide receivers I think we have a good chance to pull off an upset. The rain will be a wild card for both teams.

We waited 25 years for this win.

+ Virginia Tech. I drive past its Turfgrass Research Center just east of the stadium every time I take my daughter to school there or pick her up. ~ A decade ago it pioneered among college teams the use of "Turf Trays" in which grass and soil on a sand base sit above square plastic trays that facilitate drainage and underground air circulation for growth. The field comprises ~ 5000 of these trays. They installed it after a wrath-of-God downpour flooded the field and forced cancellation of a game.

Sorry to get into the weeds on this and go down a rabbit hole. ;) 🦃

Still puzzled about the 19-point PSU-Illini spread. Apparently I'm inappropriately optimistic about my team.

So I think we match up with them pretty well offensively. They have fast, twitchy athletes on the edges and are very aggressive in their pursuit of the ball. Our RPO seems like the perfect antidote to slow down their pass rush and take advantage of some overpursuit.

My questions are on defense can we contain the run and big plays? Stopping the run was the concern going into this year. We’ve done okay with the exception of KU but we are going to see alot of the same concepts tomorrow night. And we’ve been good at limiting big plays but KU gashed us last year.

If we can stop the run like we did at Nebraska, I think we’re got a good chance to win. If Penn State runs it like KU did I think we will struggle.

Scanned MGoBlog this afternoon for yuks and saw this from earlier in the week, complete with mandatory condescending football snark. The Connelly article is behind the ESPN+ paywall (and he!! will become a glacier before that network gets any of my cash.)

"Could be something to watch."

Lol. Yeah; might be almost as interesting as Minnesota @Michigan, though certainly nowhere near as enthralling as Oregon @ UCLA is likely to be.

Penn State fan here. I agree with a lot of your sentiments here. Illinois is a tough as nails team, well coached, with a very good QB. I don’t get the 18-pt spread. I do think our OC will throw some new wrinkles at Illinois that we haven’t seen yet. Night games at Beaver Stadium are special. I think it will look and feel like a Whiteout! Here’s to a good game with no injuries on either side.

Thanks for stopping by. Should be an outstanding atmosphere. Hope your OC throws some things at us that we saw from him in Lawrence, KS last September. ;)
