The most fair negotiations usually end with both sides swallowing hard, agreeing, and hoping they didn’t make a mistake. Especially when the “value” is something as subjective and volatile as future athletic performance.

How much is an extra win worth? There is definitely an objective revenue model that can tell you how much an extra win might be worth to an organization, but most athletic contract negotiations aren’t driven solely by revenue concerns. Stakeholders in sports are much more emotionally driven, adding even more volatility to the negotiation. The instance where the agent and the organization both walk away from the process feeling like they nailed it has to be very rare.

I think the key here is finding guys whose value is maxed in your program. If you have a way of utilizing or developing a player that makes the best fit, you'll "win" a lot of negotiations even when guys walk because the ones you screen are worth more here. I feel like that's one of the things we're seeing with Underwood --he really understands how to get guys with a vision to fit here as close to their potential as possible. It's a combination of training, physical development, coaching, character, team fit, support, etc.. Time will tell how successful he is, but we're in an era where everything's changing and I really like what we've seen.
