If I am reading the new rules right, all scholarship limits have been removed. There are now roster limits per sport. This prevents schools from having unlimited rosters by using NIL instead of scholarships.

Our "what would you do with 2 more scholarship players" seems to actually be the reverse of what happened. Instead of 13 scholarships and 4 walk-ons, the team is now limited to 15 overall.

Landing Mikel Brown would just be incredible. This "the highest rated recruit since..." talk just keeps on going higher and higher lol.

Really hope we're in a good place to beat out Bama, Ole Miss and some of the others...
Not out of bias just because we're targeting him...he might be one of my more favorite ones in the class. Rob Dillingham is really the name that immediately comes to mind.

He's already ranked #8 nationally and word seems to be that he might go higher and that he's been quite impressive. Probably the best scoring guard in the class. Really athletic, can initiate offense, great shot maker...just a top tier talent.

Does he have a campus visit scheduled?

15 means maybe a couple more project guys for our weight room, but that training seems to turn into somebody
elses benefit with the portal. the walk on program is a great way to help a kid through school and create an illini
for life. those kids are loved by the fans and students. does that then go away? hard to "waste a walk on spot with
a scholarship?

I was very impressed with Mr. Brown at the U18 tourney recently.........showed a lot of poise and mature play for such a young age...

I hope we nab him and continue this awesome recruiting wave.....I really really do.................

You don't necessarily have to give a scholarship to 15 although at a p2 program you probaby will. Those last 2-3 spots will be a little higher level of player but ones that should not expect to play their first two years at min. If I am Underwood, I would try to use those spots on the 5-15 ranked in state kids who may be more willing to sit.

Whole-heartedly agree. Would like to see us offer, for example, Tyreek Coleman, a Hendrickson favorite who's been moving up the recruiting food chain, and will probably start fielding some high major offers soon. Maybe we should grab him now, let him compete if he's willing rather than compete with other high major teams for his services out of the portal in a year or two.

I agreed with Calipari (shudder), in an NIL world you really need less scholarships, not more. Usually you only play 7 or 8 guys in any sort of regular rotation. So adding scholarships to me makes no sense. If you play 8, what value is having 2 extra guys that don't play?

There's only so much money to spend. You're not going to spend money on the 14th guy that could have been used on the #7 guy that would be in the rotation. So I'd really use those extra scholarships on the Lieb type players. A kid who wants to come to the school for academic purpose, can be a good practice player, but is never going see significant PT. If you use it on 4 star players, they're just going to transfer.

Maybe you say this gives me more chances to find a star, but even that had perils. See Podz.

I'd say it's plenty valuable for the players currently at walk-on status who work their behinds off for their teams. Why not give guys at that level the chance to earn a full ride?

Small world. I went to high school in Oakville. That would be pretty cool.
I attended Waterloo Collegiate Institute, not far from Oakville. 81 grad. Had many battles against a kid two years younger than me and he was a handful back then…David Kipfer. My team squared off against his team for the championship in 85. Funny to think about it now, but the championship was a best of three series, which we lost 2/1.
His 4 years at Providence and the accompanying final four while starting for Pitino was pretty cool.
Kipfer was a great example of of a guy that paid his dues, worked hard, trusted the process, and had a life changing result.

By the new rules, one can also award partial scholarships in all sports.
