3 teams in the Elite 8 is a down year?

Actually yes. We had only 5 tourney teams and just one top 4 seed.

One great team. A couple good teams. Mediocrity overall compared to most years.

We were the 4th best conference the country that year. It was definitely a weaker year for the conference as a whole.

Tournament performance is a very poor indication of conference strength. The Big Ten was the strongest conference, by far, in 2021 regardless of the poor tournament performance.

The weakness of the Big Ten didn't have any impact on the greatness/quality of our team but it may have had some impact on our pristine record.

Agree on your three teams. I'd add northwestern.

I'm not sure how much people realize this but our historic season in 2005 was helped by the fact that it was a pretty down year for the big ten.

Knowing that I'm sure really takes some of the shine off it, doesn't it?
The depth wasn’t as good in ‘05, but the top of the Big 10 was elite. UNC beat Wisconsin in the Elite 8, Michigan State in the Final Four, and us in the Championship. We had 3 of the final 8 teams representing the league.

FWIW I've looked at the KenPom numbers since 2002 and relative to what the B1G is today, the B1G in the early 2000s was "down". Strong teams at the top but weaker in the middle and the bottom.

Not sure of the larger context of the discussion but I agree. I want every team but Illinois to suck. That only changes once we get to the ncaa tournament, during which I want our B1G foes to suck just a little less than the field.

Well I guess you’re more of a Big Ten fan than you are an Illinois fan then, which is totally fine. The only “us” that matters to me is Illinois.
This may come as a surprise, but you actually don't get to make that decision for the poster. Also, the two aren't mutually exclusive: one can be a diehard Illinois fan AND like it when the B1G is loaded--including rival teams.

Four-Star Wing Kanon Catchings Reportedly Set to Visit BYU Basketball

He has a connection to the new BYU coaching staff in the form of new assistant coach Tim Fanning. Fanning was Catchings' coach at Overtime Elite.
His length, alongside projected lottery pick Egor Demin, could give new BYU coach Kevin Young a lot of length in the backcourt. Catchings will also take a visit to Florida State and he is considering another visit to Tennessee.

For those of us who are Illini fans first and Big Ten fans as the premier conference, your point is irrelevant. IMHO, every regular poster on this site is an Illini fan. Most are B1G fans too.

Playing in a conference that demands the best from our team and program deserves ultimate respect to the members who make winning as hard as possible.

I have always respected my opponents in several sports in which I competed over a lifetime. They are all trying to win and become the best they can be. A very few were jerks undeserving of respect, but almost all were just another version of me. They all gave and deserved respect....and they had mine.

Now, fans are another matter.

And of course, as it has always been for way over 100 years, Michigan deserves only contempt. We seem to hear their alleged "leaders" boasting about "Michigan men"...while cheating at every opportunity since NCAA competition began. IMHO, most athletes aspire to a much higher standard.

My bad, shouldn't take everything so literally on here :ROFLMAO:

That was never my intention. It’s just my point of view. Illiniindian can decide to be a fan however they want. I also never said the two were mutually exclusive. Just because I thought Illiniindian was more of a Big Ten fan than an Illinois fan doesn’t mean I thought they were less of an Illinois fan than I am. They are likely more of a Big Ten fan than I am though. Anyway, Go Illini and I hope we get Will Riley to commit soon.

I've seen talk about personality (which I don't buy) but has there been anything recently about Coleman's knee? I wonder if the NBA saw something there (and I don't believe teams can publicize health issues).

Now THAT'S a football school. I hope he goes there and makes it to the second weekend...just to get blown out by us 😁
