Am I the only one who sees it both ways? I'm happy for Coleman. Great dude. Illini for life. Stayed when he didn't need to. Took us further (with help of course) than any team since '05. Nothing but respect for him trying to go showcase his skillset somewhere else/get the bag; HOWEVER, the old school college basketball fan in me is still going to puke watching him play for UCONN or UNC... I think the majority of people are more mad at the system than the individuals involved and that doesn't make them dumb.

If you are mad at the player for getting more money, that is dumb in my book. (and as noted, he might not get more money to go somewhere else).

Being mad at the system is fine!

You lost me on the bold part. What part of our transfer class had you thinking Brad was building a roster and thinking Coleman was coming back? I thought it was obvious that Brad was planning for life after Hawkins when Humrichous was announced.

From the outside looking in, it sure feels like Brad was confident Coleman was going pro or showcasing his talents somewhere else next season.
It's not that this individual decision is a surprise or a systemic problem in a vacuum.

But it's not a vacuum. BU's Illinois has had a lower gravitational pull on keeping its own players (and assistant coaches to an extent) than most peers from the moment he got here, the general trend well predates NIL.

Now we all know the dance steps of justifying every individual one of those moves, but the plain facts of above-average outflow are very clear. Now of course BU's Illinois has ALSO excelled at bringing in new great players year after year after year, so we have come out way ahead in the shuffle, and the acquisition of promising talent continues.

But the "serious question about how we're pursuing our team building strategy" is whether at Peak Portal it is possible for Illinois to buy enough talent every year to live without an industry-standard level of (mutual, player side and staff side) desire for our players to stay? At Peak Portal we are seeing the BU level of willingness to have an amicable divorce means something close to a total roster flush every offseason. Is that viable?

Well then instead of prolonging your suffering you should make a clean break and never look at or (especially) opine publicly about college basketball ever again. Your health will be better.

Insiders, has there been any interest that you have heard of for Jamir Watkins?

Have heard about the international kid, Kevin Patton Jr., and Miles Kelly, but besides from fans I haven't seen any talk about Watkins

Seems like the Shannon Jr. sell for him would almost be perfect, if he were to return to college.

I don't really want to excuse the NCAA but the NBA doesn't have to use a lot of its profit to subsidize all the other college sports.

The truth of the matter is that the revenue producing sports allow all the other sports to exist at college.

I'm happy to see kids getting paid(especially in football) but I don't want to see the end of Olympic sports at the college level simply since they don't produce revenue. !!!! women's basketball would be on life support at most colleges.

(1) The NBA spends lavishly on auxiliary initiatives - such as NBA Africa and similar programs, production, lobbying, non-season programming, and community initiatives. NBA teams also invest plenty of funds in private practice facilities, extended travel, nutrition, etc. that are either the same or more than college programs.

(2) there is a big accounting assumption based on how revenue producing sports allow other sports to exist. I get this is a D1-P4 focused board, but many, many schools have adopted a different approach and their sport programs exist with none of them making money.

The issue is not that there isn't enough money flowing into the system. The issue is who is getting that money and how much money they are getting.

Yeah...if you could just go ahead and start a Egor rumor so we can get the f off this CoHawk nonsense?

I think Brad understands that bringing in a new roster every year isn't sustainable. I think (hope) that's why there was some priority on getting guys this year and aren't all one-year players. The current roster has pretty good class balance. It will remain to be seen how the roster turns over next year though.

Another aspect of Coleman transferring that I haven't seen talked about: When he gets drafted in 2025, he won't be known as Hawkins from Illinois, but rather Hawkins from X school. Every website with a player profile and every in-game graphic will have the name of the school he last played with as his college. His 4 years at Illinois could be forgotten by those in the NBA world. This is what hurts the most imo.
I think we're going to get to a point where that doesn't even matter and player intros/profiles have no mention of a college affiliation.

Well let's just do it in terms of next season eligible players gained and lost during this "transfer period", which seems logical and consistent enough

IN:
Kylan Boswell
Carey Booth
Tomislav Ivisic
Ben Humrichous
Tre White
Jake Davis

OUT:
Coleman Hawkins
Dain Dainja
Luke Goode
Jase Butler
Amani Hansberry
Sencire Harris
Nico Moretti

I wouldn't outright say the OUT group is better, I think it's a close call. I would note that Hawkins is the highest ranked of anyone on either list, the OUT group is older and more experienced, and their case gets stronger if you limit it to 2024-25 season value, which maybe you should given the likelihood of players entering the portal every year.
Obviously, this isn't complete yet - if we add no one else - I would still make the argument we won "in the portal" but we will be a worse team next year than last year when you add losing our two best players. If we add a stud, I think it changes the evaluation significantly and I could say we had a home run offseason and have the potential to be as good as last year with 80% roster turnover which is saying something

IMO he has already adjusted with all of the portal guys being potential multiple year players for Illinois.

All except Humrichous.

I am hoping he is on free throw line with Illini up 1 with 3 seconds to go.

We forgave him because he was a 4 year player. At UConn UNC they will curse him as incompetent hired gun.

Egor we hardly knew you.
The internet rumors about BYU were not very credible.
It is always a long shot bring in European players. Gonzaga and AZ seem to have the formula down. Everybody else not so much. Look how Big Z could not play till Jan for KY last year.

Yes, I'm implying CH isn't a person.

The equation is completely different. He clearly isn't a regular undergrad, he has a completely different relationship with the university and its supporters.

He can do what he wants, and i wish him well. But let's not pretend people aren't gonna feel jilted, and i'm calling BS that it would have anything to do with a search for growth through a change of scenery.

For the 'atta boy' crowd, how are we supposed to feel if a fully healthy Coleman signs with Michigan or Iowa or NW for his final year and makes first-team all big ten?
And here's a fun hypothetical. What if NIL was around during Dee Brown's time and he transferred to a rival his last year? Or pick some other beloved player from your college days... Lucas Johnson, Frank Williams, Deon Thomas, Kendall Gill, Eddie Johnson, etc. Now imagine them in a rival's uniform for their senior year hitting shots in Assembly Hall.
Unless they start selling velcro jerseys with interchangeable numbers and names for the kids to wear, I don't see how this current model is sustainable.

CoHawk already made it pretty dang clear he will not go to another B1G team or Miznoz. Kinda threw shade at Goode for doing it.

Dee would have never been an Illini had this stuff been going on back then.

I don't see CH in the same category of talent as any of the people you mention except Lucas Johnson, who will always be one of my most favorite Illini players ever. The other 5 would have left me devastated. Coleman not so much. Best wishes to him wherever he goes. Once he entered the portal he was erased from my mind in regards to the illinois basketball program. I really dont care who he signs with anymore. BU had no choice but to move on after he entered the portal & we should applaud what he has done so far.

The only guy I can think of then is Watkins to fill our alpha wing role. If he withdraws from the draft, I think we should go all in. He's the only one left.

Are we sure it's more likely for him to withdraw than to stay in?

How long (if at all possible with NIL) till we see performance based NIL or bonuses at the end of the year? Maybe if something along those line, we could have made it right with Hawkins at the end of last season. I can respect him wanting more money but it doesnt make me feel any better about it. I will admit I was critical of him at times, but never publicly and not nearly as much last year. He grew leaps and bounds last year. I wish he would stay, but also excited to see what these other elite guys that Brad has will do.

Is everybody gonna be sitting around the Coleman campfire telling stories of his Illini greatness and 4 years of unwavering loyalty if he knocks us out of the tourney next season?
It wouldn't bother me a bit, same with Dain's new team. In fact, if we do get knocked out, I hope it's CH's or DD's new team and they have a monster game. I'll be a fan of both their teams just because I loved them at Illinois. I'll be rooting for Goode also but not Indiana.

CH has shown nothing but love for Illinois and was a huge part of one of the best seasons we've had in a long time. He'll be one of my favorite all time Illini no matter what he does.
