Top schools won’t add hs players to be 5th string. I would imagine they hit the portal even harder which will make roster retention for us much harder.

Fair concern, but this ignores the principle of top schools will also lose some good players to the portal. Situations similar to Brooks going from Texas to Illinois are going to happen.

Using an example, if I'm Ohio State, I am still recruiting the best HS recruits every year. Blue chip ratio is a thing and has been discussed on here and other areas as a blueprint for being a championship contender. No one is getting a star to leave a top program unless there is a coaching change or scandal. So if you're Ohio State, you don't have to worry about your best players leaving, so getting the best "clay" is the name of the game. The players that lose those battles to other stars are the ones you might lose, but that's okay because you kept the star and are bringing in plenty of willing replacements because you're Ohio State and you'll get a handful (or more) blue chip recruits every year.

Going further down the rabbit hole - I believe Ohio State has proven that they'll get five-star recruits in areas where playing time is murky at best, or almost certain to be limited. Just look at this year's class. They have the #1 and #2 (!) ranked cornerbacks committed to them. That itself seems like an issue, as I can envision a freshman getting a good chunk of snaps but it would be almost unprecedented for a championship contender to start two true freshman at CB. But even ignoring that concern, they will have one (Davison Igbinosun) corner who played 600+ snaps last year and won't be eligible for the draft until 2026 who was really good last year. They have three seniors who still have eligibility after this season. Their 2024 HS class includes the #5 ranked and #16 ranked HS cornerback. Their current sophomores include the #6 and #8 ranked HS cornerbacks. Igbinosun is a transfer from Ole Miss. So yes, it's extremely like that one of the top two HS cornerbacks in the country will be the 5th cornerback on Ohio State in 2025.

Ohio state will still recruit 5stars and that won’t change. But with the increase in scholarships I would imagine a lot of it goes to transfers. There was really no need to expand the scholar ship limit to 105.

and the 105 is a hard roster limit as well as scholarship limit .
it basically kills the walk-on program .
I guess they were aware of some programs by passing the scholly limit with NIL.

we simply will likely use most of that expanded scholly limit with transfers .

Isn’t this better for walk on type talent? At a school like IL, we aren’t bringing on another 20 high 3 star kids. We’ll likely just offer scholarships to the type of player who otherwise would have walked on.

no, I doubt it
we will continue to try to sign more 3* talent out of hs, but most of those schollies will go to transfers in

I see no real reason to give $50,000 and a roster spot to a guy no other P4 school wanted

100% agree. Most walkons have fcs offers. I would imagine we are more developmental. Players but those are kids with mac or lower tier p4 offers

This is the difference typically between a developmental recruit and a walk on.
