That picture of Zook is perfect. It can represent so many things!

"Look at me, I'm so great that I can even recruit at Illinois."

"Hmmmm we're up two after that touchdown late in the 4th Quarter, better go for the 2-point conversion.

Aw shucks we didn't get it. Well, it's not like they'll march right down the field and kick a game winning field go... Welp, I still look great."

And, Purdue/Walters just got a four-star CB out of Ohio. Barring a bunch of wins this year and surge in NIL, this staff will have quite the talent deficit

Purdue got the 7th best player in Ohio (!). The top 15 recruits in Ohio are committed to Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Purdue. These are the situations where it's tough for me to reconcile that discourse about how Illinois needs to prove success to in-state recruits before they can get a top-7 recruit, but a career 4-8 Ryan Walters can get a top-7 recruit in a much more competitive, adjacent state. It's not Purdue's NIL that's the difference maker, especially considering Purdue is not on a similar stature of the previously-mentioned programs. The low blow is Galloway said DeMeco Kennedy was a difference maker in his recruitment.

The only, and simple solution, I can reach is Walters is a lot closer to the Zook model of roster management (recruit! recruit! recruit! worry about development later) than Bielema's approach (happy medium between recruiting and development, with the understandable limitations to recruiting by being at Illinois). Not sure this is completely acceptable, especially with the understanding that Walters filled out a lot of positions on his staff with previous Bielema hires.

Why oh why did Lovie look at his 2017 recruitment performance and decide to change course
I think once Lovie realized he wasn't going back to the NFL the bottom fell out. I think when Josh hired him they both thought this was going to be a 2 vanity project where Lovie would show up a bring some excitement to the program with some cash and talent infusion. Lovie would freshen up his name saying see u can work with young players. 2 cycles in Lovie would move on and the momentum could keep going. Of course none of that happened.

Bass from East Side declares Wednesday… looking like another 4 star for Mizzou😡😡

ESLs Charles Bass to Mizzou, as expected. Getting hard to be optimistic in the overall recruiting trajectory of this staff. In the pre-NIL days, with 3 ESL Flyers on the roster, we likely have a legitimate shot here. But, in today's landscape, we barely form much of a formidable opponent for upper-mid level talent (and pretty much no shot for top talent)

J.C. Davis, Zakhari Franklin and Terrance Brooks would disagree with you.

How much of this can be attributed due to the coaching staff and how much is due to circumstances (NIL pool, for instance) that they really can't control?

I don’t pay too much attention to recruiting, but does BB recruit JCs? At least in CA, where there aren’t as many 1aa, d2, d3 options jc football here is very solid. Probably not any future all Americans but chances to add some solid depth. They’ll already be 2 or 3 years out of hs, so you’d know what you’re getting.

I think it’s been hit or miss recently. First it appeared to be a good place to go because everyone else was looking at the transfer portal. Isaiah Adam and zy chrisler.
Then next cycle secondary help and couple of olinemen that didn’t contribute from what I remember.
Now sanders wr and brown dline.
So I think same as always. Go after the studs that were overlooked/not visible. Depth pieces don’t appear to work out because they only have had 1 or 2 years of experience. At least don’t expect them to contribute immediately but better to tonight school recruiting in that case. Better to get depth in the transfer portal with a senior or junior, like bush last year or cox this year.
