Illinois Football Recruiting Thread

This is a long, multiple years process. If the team shows gradual improvement in getting guys to the NFL, increasing wins, growing fan interest . . . the recruits will come.

We've now got a solid staff. Very good facilities. Selling more season tickets. Increasing NIL. An AD who truly gets it. And the team is now competitive in almost every game, where for much of the prior 25 years it was not. Maybe we're not trending STRAIGHT up, but we definitely are trending in the right direction.

Well said. There are still positives - lots of confidence in Bielema out there, ticket sales seem to be way up - five of the first six games are winnable - last year's recruiting class was possibly the best one since Zook's star waned. I'd even be so bold to say that Illinois has one of the better conference QBs and is underrated even among the fanbase, this might be the best set of WRs, and best run of WR corps, in a long time, and the offensive line should be better.

This year seems to be a great opportunity to get 7ish wins and keep Bielema's momentum. What we cannot do is have the 2-3 head scratching losses that have plagued us every year so far.

We were 5-7 last year. We should have been 7-5 with a pass interference call vs NW and no choke job vs WI.

Portal gives and takes away. I am excited to see if Bret can get back to 8 wins in 2024. It is harder with addition of 3 very good Pac12 teams but this is the new world.

Ugh I keep forgetting about the Wisconsin game, and I was there (was dragging screaming overtired kids to the car as we blew the game in the 4th quarter). Dang, we really weren't that far off. Hopefully our 50/50 games can go our way more often than not this year.

Beat Purdue. Beat Northwestern. Find 2 more wins in the conference or against KU. It's not an impossible task.

While I can't disagree, you could also mention how close we were to a winless season. That's how volatile this was

- Toledo: miracle Casey catch
- FAU: just escaped
- MD: 3 pt win and had the fortune of some really questionable Locksley calls
- Minny: miracle Paddock to Isiah
- IU: needed overtime

Guys, it doesn't really matter what the record for a team is anymore, If you have enough NIL money, good players will probably come. We are seeing players transferring from good teams and going to lesser teams because of the money. Terrance Brooks is good example of that. Illinois is not a better team than Texas, and yet, he transferred here. Why is that? Illinois paid good money to get him. Does anyone really think he would choose Illinois if another top program offered him more?

There is no single recruitment that should be a watershed moment. That said, if you can't keep an in-state commit that is solid but not elite, that's an awfully warning sign.
While it's not great obviously, I think once the insiders hinted that we have somewhere in the $2-$3M NIL range for football it cemented that recruiting is going to be difficult moving forward. That's just such a big gap between the estimated $10-20M NIL the upper echelon B10 teams are reportedly putting down, and really only competitive with the B10 historic bottomfeeders. It's why I think we have to celebrate the recruiting successes we do get along the way, because it's not an easy path to fix. We need sustained success to be able to start pulling in larger NIL, but to get sustained success, you either need NIL or to really hit the jackpot on multiple recruiting classes in a row where players strongly overperform.

In some ways, being the Illini football fan is like how many of us were when trying to get our first job. Being told that you aren't considered because they want more experience, but how can you get that experience if nobody is willing to give it to you if you don't have it in the first place, and even if you did have that experience, why would you be interviewing for their entry level position instead of one more commensurate with that experience? And the answer is as simple as we just need people to take chances on us. The problem is actually getting that to happen is not so simple. We're going to need solid coaching, development, eye for underrated talent, and some luck. And then once we get that luck, try not blowing our own foot off with a shotgun...

I like it.
For kicks, breaking down those 4 things needed for the whole---

Solid Coaching: 20%
Player Dev: 20%
Eye for underrated talent: 20%

Luck: 40% IMO, we need a good dose of double luck in general and to do the three things above in order to get this thing turned around in the way we all want it to go

In that second paragraph, anyone else have a flash back to that 80's hit, Secret of My Success?
