I'm not sure if it's an indictment of Beason's play because he can't work out during visits (right?) and he hasn't played in a long time. Maybe he wants to go further South, maybe he feels a cultural connection with an HBCU, maybe they are providing guarantees for playing time that others are not.
Keep in mind is that players entering the portal are going to be experiencing the most difficult environment ever for transfer athletes. Everyone is "overweight" on rostered players and scholarship allotments. If you enter the portal and have limited tape for a team that either (1) doesn't have an all-conference player blocking your playing time or (2) you play for a program that isn't held in high regard, you are likely to make a serious stumble down the football program pecking order. There will be transfers that normally would have landed at a MAC school a couple years ago that will end up at DII programs or will quit altogether this spring/summer.
