Do you have the same stats handy for defense? My guess is we fare no better on that side of the ball, with this last year breaking the trend and hopefully setting a new expectation going forward.
Going off the last 10 years stats by average rank from all of the teams, Illinois has had a higher ranked defense 7 of the past 10 seasons.

If you go off of the past 7 seasons, D has had a higher ranking 6 of the past 7 seasons.

My faith in BB comment comes off of his track record and what he has done so far. If you really want a staggering stat you should check out the time of possession Illinois has had the ball compared to past BB teams during the same time. We don't need a gunslinger but we can at least be in majority of games with someone who can keep the chains moving.

Seems like a few new QBs are hitting the transfer portal every week. Even if we don't land the top guys we should be reaching out as that QB spot is wide open for the taking in a major conference.

I have faith BB will turn this ship around. That being said I really hope his staff reaches out to almost every QB that has entered the portal. I do not recall seeing a somewhat consistent offense since the Kittner years. Even the Juice Williams years look incredible compared to the last 10 years.

Yearly reminder that Nathan Scheelhaase needs to be considered one of the best Illinois QBs of all-time and, besides an abysmal decision to hire Billy Gonzales/Chris Beatty as co-OCs in 2012, was a lot more consistent and deserves a reminder:

Passing yards: 8,460 passing yards for Kittner, 8,568 passing yards for Scheellhaase
Completion percentage: 54.4% for Kittner, 63% for Scheellhaase
QB Rating (career): 124.5 for Kittner, 130.2 for Scheellhaase
TDs: 66 for Kittner, 55 for Scheellhaase
Plus, Scheellhaase has 2,000+ career rushing yards and 19 rushing TDs!

This isn't meant to besmirch Kittner and his legacy, this is simply to point out that Scheellhaase was one of the best in program history.

Good player, but I heard he's kind of stiff in the pocket.

Ship has sailed with adding DeVito but really wish Zach Calzada had entered the transfer portal a couple weeks ago.

If you think Calzada had a serious interest in coming here, couldn't he beat out TDV?

No doubt Calzada could compete or beat out DeVito. I'm assuming the staff gave DeVito some playing time assurances (at least to start the season) to secure his commitment.

People haven't forgotten about Scheelhaase at all. Fortunately or unfortunately they are both top 10 all-time Illinois Quarterbacks. Scheelhaase also played in 6 more games and they have around the same passing numbers.

I will point out that my Kittner comment was about the consistency of the offense and not a QB comparison. Scheelhaase was good but not solid all of his years. The offense during his time could not score points like many of the other Illinois years. Kittner got thrown to the wolves his 1st year and they played a number of QBs. He threw 1 TD and 7 INTs. His Soph-Senior year he threw 65 TD 26 INT and those years the offensive average scoring by year in the nation was 16th, 51st and 24th. Most solid years we have had in a row from a QB and offense is what I meant. Scheelhaase and the offense were 26th, 91st, 122nd(out of 124) and 61st in his 4 years. Scheelhaase was good but also had to force plays way to much. Took a lot of hits and also lost a lot of fumbles having to carry the ball so much.

If Illinois could find a halfway decent QB like Kittner, Scheelhaase or Juice this is a bowl team. Have watched to many QBs throw an out route or a quick route and the ball is 5 yards over the guys head or at his shoes. Most of us aren't asking for much but just a little more consistency. BB will bring it, will see if it happens sooner or later.

Both VVG qbs also VVG people too...blessed to have spent some time with both. Also can't wait till we get Nate on staff.

I assume a QB transfer would like some offensive line assurances, something we would have trouble providing at the present.

I never saw much talk about him. Were his injuries so bad he can't perform anywhere his prior level, hence his landing spot?
I think his injury certainly played into it. But I think teams needing to get back down to pre-Covid numbers as well as the sheer number of players entering the portal has made things pretty competitive. I see a lot of players from Power 5 conferences receiving offers/taking visits to schools from a step below if not more.

I guess, but wow. Top 100 down to whatever level Alabama A&M is. Then again, he's unproven at this point.

I was hoping he’d go to UTSA, an up-and-coming smaller program in his home state. He always stayed loyal to Illinois. I’ll always remember after he gave us a verbal, he planned a visit to Ohio State, who wanted him badly, and he tweeted to Illini nation not to worry about it and later canceled his visit. He was like the Trent Frazier of the football team in my eyes. Really wanted him to succeed. (I had to stop following him on Twitter, though, because he REALLY likes girls and my feed was being filled up with scantily clad college women whose pix he liked. My feed has to be all Illini sports; I cannot be distracted by other things or else how can I fix all of our problems?

I’m really glad you’re working to fix all our problems, rather than wasting time looking at pretty women on Twitter. I’d appreciate it if you could focus most of your efforts on the O line. I’ll check in later to see how you’re progressing. Meanwhile Imma head over to Twitter for a bit..
