I don't believe Illinois offered him. The staff definitely did not recruit him.
That makes no sense. I much prefer Underwoods style of offering a wide swath of talented players. If nothing else, your name gets mentioned with top talent. I don’t see the downside.

The staff at Simeon encouraged Marcus Harper to decommit from Illinois last Spring. This is probably the reason our staff never pursued James.
But no! I thought it was because our staff hates instate kids and only wants SEC leftovers from Georgia. Also I thought all the coaches from the state wanted us to succeed. Btw this isn’t the only kid this has happened too in the last couple cycles from in the state.

Encouraging a kid to decommit from Illinois? If this is true then I would say that constitutes some blame there

Wasn't he a transfer? You think the coach had that much pull over a transfer?

The staff may not like it, but part of the job when it comes to recruiting is building relationships with HS coaches around the state, especially when you are a bottom feeder like Illinois has become. I don't know the whole story, but if what you are saying is true, the smart thing to do would be to try and improve the relationship rather than ignoring the problem and not recruiting a 4* lineman from your own back yard. Nobody said sucking up to prima donna HS coaches would be fun, but that's part of the job and why we pay you millions of $.

This is a random question but does anyone have a realistic expectation for this class by amount of players per position/names that are looking at us? Would like to hear so I know where to put my expectations at for the end result of this class. Thanks.

Yea great plan waste time and resources pursuing the unattainable when the angry mob of Illinios Loyalty members are on your tail with pitch forks and torches because your not landing enough recruits already....sounds like a sound plan.

Yes....period!
It’s obvious you haven’t dealt with a kid and recruitment. I am responding because this is how rumors become law. 90% of the time the family is behind the final decision. 100% of the time the recruit won’t be honest about why a decision was made. Often time Coaches shoulder the blame because they aren’t afraid to take it. No transfer will ever give the new coach that much power. I’ve dealt with 100’s of recruits and I have never seen this happen. Ever!

Sorry, but an inability to even offer a 4* player 2 hours from campus is pretty inexplicable.

IMO, HS coaches seem to wield more authority than they used to. They can either trash or promote a college program to their players. The ILLINI are good enough for their MAC players but not the cream. Until the program secures a consistent winning program, don't look for too many players from metro Chicago or Northern Illinois. Lovie would be better off to concentrate on downstate coaches and players when it comes to recruiting Illinois. Just MO.
