Among all rookie guards, Ayo is:

*9th in Average Minutes
*9th in Scoring Average
*4th in FG% (of those averaging at least 5 min/g)
*1st in 3P% (of those averaging at least 5 min/g)
*7th in Rebound Average
*1st in +/- at +4.6

BTW - there were 20 guards selected ahead of him.

You might wonder looking at that start to his season whether Houston's front office might be rethinking Josh Christopher over Ayo. He's going to have a lot of NBA front office folks wondering why they were so blind.

As a Bull fan from the very beginning, I love when other GM's make mistakes in the draft. Getting Ayo
when we did is basically amazing. I hope that he has a long connection with the Bulls. I will not be surprised
when he becomes a starter, Ayo has some serious talent.

Yeah. If Ayo turns out to be a star, none of these GMs will have an excuse. Ayo dominated college basketball. 1st team AA and Cousy award winner. Hardly undiscovered talent. I can’t help but wonder where he would have gone in the draft if we had advanced to the final four. Their loss is our gain.

I’m starting to wonder…how long was Chicago on the clock in the draft?

When the pick ahead of them made their selection and it wasn’t Ayo, we’re they on the phone immediately? Or did they deliberate?

I have this (very biased but maybe true) image in my head of the Chicago front office collectively exploding with joy and disbelief when they realized that they were gonna get Ayo all the way in the 2nd round and that he was still available at all.

I can’t find the story now, but I remember reading an article that said exactly that…

It will take 3 years to evaluate. Ayo is a bit older and expected to develop and adjust quicker. Some of the earlier picks were based on potential that's yet unrealized.

Ayo + Stacey King are just about enough to bring me back to the NBA. "OOOOOH SIIIRAAACHAAAA! hot sauce time, hot sauce time, hot sauce time." His enthusiasm along with Ayo's is a breath of fresh air.
Stacey King is the best announcer in the league right now, and as much as I love Johnny Redd Kerr as my introduction to the analyst side of game commentary, Stacey might be the best ever. I thought JRK was going to be impossible to replace, I can't even fathom how you could replace Stacey.

Ayo ranks amongst the top 25 in the NBA when sorted by first name!! Crazy.

Ayo is a rotation player in a first place team. Not sure where Bulls end up but they look playoff bound.

Bulls were smart to sign him for two years at 2.5M. He is worth much more in his current role, and if his improvement continues he is heading towards 15-20minutes/ game.

Ayo is such a threat as a big PG with speed heading to the hoop. On defense he is a very good rebounder and active feet/hands.

My guess is that they didn't like his shot mechanics, and focused too much on his aggressiveness making plays, driving, etc.. Ayo was the leader at Illinois, so he forced things sometimes. He isn't asked to do that in the NBA. I'd add that they also failed to recognize his character and intangibles. It's still early, but that initial contract looks like a steal. If his goal was to stick in the NBA, he's setting himself up really well.

There is another intangible that he brings as an enthusiastic rookie. It is a long 82 game season. The players who have been at this for 4, 5 or more years have a hard time maintaining that level of focus and enthusiasm that he will have all year. He will be fighting for playing time all season. If his chemistry is okay with the veterans (which is seems to be), he can provide the spark needed to carry the Bulls thru the long season.

You are right about the long season. Unfortunately, it wears on the rookies a lot more than it does on the vets that have learned how to endure it.

It will be interesting to see how Ayo holds up. I believe he is so focused on being successful that his enthusiasm will not drop. He is on a mission to prove he belongs and everyone missed it when he didn't get drafted until the second round.

*** non-Illini ***

No Bulls thread, so putting this here. How dumb is the Pelicans front office? Can't believe we got Lonzo Ball for virtually nothing, except money.

Haven't followed The League in years (D Rose, Jimmy Butler), but Ball has far exceeded my expectations. Great acquisition.

My only concern is that your legs get to a point that you are feeling like you are running in a waist-high swimming pool.

Not saying that Ayo will become another Bull like, ‘The Greatest Of All Time’ who also happened to play for the Bulls... BUT Ayo and ‘He’ share a very important quality: A passionate (obsessive?) desire to continuously improve all aspects of Their Game at all times and to be successful to the exclusion of anything standing in their way.

You can’t teach this. You can’t give it to anyone. You probably can’t learn this, either. This is either part of your personality (soul) or it isn’t. And it is part of precious-few talents in The League.

There is an unbelievable amount of ball talent out there at all levels. But to have the personal quality that Ayo and ‘He’ have is rare and special.

Every time Ayo hits a Three or makes a steal or grabs a rebound... We all (Illini fans) are doing that along with him. One thing he will be is a Chicago sports legend with a Chicago history that very few can match in any sport.

"Welcome to the Ayo Dosunmu edition of a Bulls mailbag. We’ll summarize the roughly 113 questions about Dosunmu with the following three and then tackle other subjects."

Never quit, Illini fans. 113 questions about Ayo..haha. Nice article!
