Illini Golfers in the Pros

#26
I'm getting old and aging by the minute, but I think Ben Hogan could make these golfers today look silly with his precision. Mr. Hogan won a couple times at Pinehurst. Nuff said. Five U.S. Opens for Mr. Hogan!
But yea the best of the best who dominated a long time ago were the best for a reason. Elite consistency and mentality/work ethic.

Detry was one of only 4 guys to break par on Thursday and Friday, joining Aberg, DeChambeau and Finau in that accomplishment. He will be paired with Patrick Cantlay in the second-to-last pairing tomorrow. Campbell will be paired with KU's Gunnar Broin, who is one of only three amateurs to make the cut.

11:34am ET: Brian Campbell/Gunnar Broin (a)
3:24pm ET: Thomas Detry/Patrick Cantlay

Poor Jackson Buchannan was 1 stroke away from making the cut.

So much for any TV time for Detry. 3 over after 4 holes. He needs to fight real hard.

Rough start for detry 3 over through 2 but has a birdie back. Just stay in contention and level out. Get hot tomorrow and anything can happen.

Mike Small is in the field of the XXIO Illinois Senior Open, June 17-18, Hawthorn Woods C.C., according to Illinois PGA website.
Thats a quick turnaround from this weekend he has a high school mini camp at Atkins right now.

Rough day for Detry, shooting a 40-36 to fall well behind. Only hit 4 fairways all day on a course that will punish you with that sandy "native area". Hopefully he can rebound tomorrow and get back into the top 10. Campbell had a tough day as well, falling back to +8.

Impressive performance by DeChambeau - took some risks and they paid off. Up three strokes with 18 to play.

Still, not bad for Thomas. (I want him to eat that Shipley from Ohio State).

I'm not a fan of yelling things after guys hit the ball i/e "Get in the hole!" or USA" etc. That being said.. I did catch some guy yell "ILL" at Detry after his drive on Saturday. Not mad about it lol
I heard that, too. And somebody answered: "I-N-I!" Great national publicity for Illinois on electrical television! ILL-INI is a bit different from "you da man" or "inda hole!" I think. But shut up, everybody.

But it seems to me the fans are yelling before the player hits the ball or a moment before contact.

Yeah.. it is all annoying. Just found myself smiling a bit at that. That's why I will always love the Masters.. a lot less of that. Having been to a US Open and several Masters..it doesn't compare with how the patrons/fans act. Different breed.

And amateur tournaments. Like those I've volunteered at Rich Harvest Farms - NCAA finals and Palmer Cups, collegiate, No beer or liquor served at RHF. Went home, had a couple or two! Saw Illini in action not under the influence of anything but plain, good golf. Plenty of clapping, cheers, no beers. I shuttled the likes of Dylan, Nick, ADC, others between holes 9 and 10. Shuttling not under the influence. No SUI! That's my idea of golf.

Unfortunately Piercen and Tommy both missed the cut in the Victoria Open. Piercen qualified for the entire Canadian swing so he should get more starts this summer. Another former Illini, Noah Gillard, made the cut and is currently T19. Noah, who transferred to IU prior to his junior year, is also making his professional debut.

Thomas Detry (PGA Tour Traveler's Championship) and Brian Campbell (KFT Compliance Solutions Championship) both will play the weekend as well.
