The grouping will be together on Thursday (2:20pm ET) and Friday (8:35pm ET). Thomas and Brian were teammates for most of their time at Illinois, while Jackson is a decade later. Cool to see the USGA set that up! My only question remaining - who will be on Jackson's bag this weekend?
My question exactly!

I hope Jackson has the best, most experienced caddy who knows Pinehurst. Tough course, especially the greens, they say.

Just wondering: why didn't Mike Small play in Stricker's American Family? He was in the field, had a tee time Friday morning, then no mention.

Hope he's okay. No problems.

Maybe on his way to NC to loop for Jackson!
Not out of the realm of possibility. I just hope Detry, Campbell and Buchanan get some tv coverage. I agree: glad, bravo that USGA put them in the same threesome Thursday and Friday.

I did figure out a way to follow the Detry-Campbell-Buchanan group via Shotcast, stats and all. Not sure if this link will put you directly on the right page (you may have to play around with the settings), but definitely worth trying since I doubt they will get much TV coverage unless they have an early run.

TV coverage is currently on USA, and will move to Peacock at 4pm CT.

Nice day for Detry, started with 2 early bogies but worked his way back to finish under par (and in the top 10). He is four behind the leaders.

Rough start for Jackson with a 42 on the front nine, but he seemed to settle down after that. He was one under on the back, giving himself a chance at making the cut (which will probably be +5 or +6). Brian is in decent shape as well if he stays out of trouble tomorrow.

Watching the coverage brought back some memories of previous U.S. Opens at Pinehurst. Tough course with those mound greens, very hard to stick a landing. Also very unforgiving if you stray from the fairway. Detry should be fine around the greens given his chipping ability. As long as he avoids the rough he'll stay within striking distance.

Nice post round interview with Thomas as well
Articulate like crazy. Said hello to him, wished him well , Go Illini! at Palmer Cup at Rich Harvest Farms several years ago. What a gentleman! Only problem was Jon Rahm was standing next to Thomas and interrupted our chat with some Arizona State nonsense. True story. No big deal.

Great! Just tuned in. Detry leading! Already a mention of Illinois golf, Illini, Mike Small. Go Jackson, Brian, make cut. No Mike Small on Jackson bag, though.

I read in the N-G article below that Jackson's friend from Georgia is on the bag, they grew up playing golf together. Looks like the cut is projected to be +5, so he'll probably end up missing it by a stroke. That's too bad, he fought well after a rough start - he shot a 70 today, which is a heck of an accomplishment on this course. Hopefully it builds his confidence for his upcoming pro events.

Bob Asmussen | Major accomplishment for Illini's Jackson Buchanan

Congrats to Campbell on making the cut, his game is definitely on the upslope and he will almost certainly play on the Tour next year based on his standings in the KFT. And definitely looking forward to watching Detry tomorrow, who will have an afternoon tee time for sure.

I don’t believe an Illini has ever won a major right? Detry and Pieters have been T4. Stricter has been top 2-4 in all 4 I think but never won. Nick Hardy has been t15. Meyer t20. Points t10/15.
Bob Goalby, I think. Attended U of I, I think, Won famous/infamous Masters in 1968 after Roberto's scorecard mistake.

I'm getting old and aging by the minute, but I think Ben Hogan could make these golfers today look silly with his precision. Mr. Hogan won a couple times at Pinehurst. Nuff said. Five U.S. Opens for Mr. Hogan!

It’s a totally different game. The clubs the balls the courses etc. advancement in technology has completely changed the game of golf. Like other sports people hit the ball farther they put more spin on it they’re better athletes (largely) and so they had to make the courses a lot tougher.
