Message boards be messaging. I personally expect a recurring theme this year to be harping on how much talent there is similar to how people have hit Duke for under-performing with loaded rosters. When I think of freshman Ayo vs the guy who was drafted, or TSJ when he got here and how much he did the last month as an Illini, those players really developed into stars and NBA guys even though they were inconsistent with flashes of who'd they become along the way. The roster this year has a *lot* of talent, but a chunk of it is young, and almost none have played together. A slow start wouldn't surprise me.

very true. but some fans really should think a bit before they post, lol

WRT to our start, not much is gonna surprise me. we could be lights out, mediocre or anywhere in between. hope Brad has the alchemy gift again. our depth is really gonna help there. tick is the best carrot

Impressive considering we lost three such games last year.
Inability to beat Zack Edey for past 3 years drove me crazy. Glad to see him graduate so we can get back to winning B10 regular season titles !

I don't see either of the tobacco road boys on this list...

Not much of a sample size for either so take what you will from it but not including postseason when ranking aren't updated Scheyer is 1-4 and Davis is 6-4.

A good portion if these matchups were against each other so that may or may now skew it depending the objective of this exercise.

Anyone have a way to figure Brads record vs top 10 while at Illinois?
Assuming they're counting tournament wins.

Brad was 1-0 at SFA with a win over 8th ranked West Virginia and Bob Huggins who he was an asst coach for at K-state in the 2016 tournament went they nearly went on a sweet 16 run. They did forfeit this win though due to sanctions(2015 and 2016 seasons).

He was 1-5 at OSU with a win over #7 West Virginia(Brad owned Huggins I guess though they split that year). Lost to #4 UNC, #2 Baylor, #6 Baylor, #2 Kansas, and #1 Kansas.

So by my count Brad would be 13-11(.522) against top 10 teams at Illinois. If you want to take it one step further, he was 1-5 in his first two seasons at Illinois, so Brad is 12-6(.667) over the last 5 years or since he rebuilt them into a competitive program in 2019.

I like this way of looking at it better. Another good metric is record against top 25 when top 25 to show how coaches perform against good teams once they assemble good teams.

I was rewatching last year B10 tournament. I forgot how close the Ohio State (last shot) and Nebraska (down by 14 in 2nd half) were. Truly a great job by team to rally to win both games and start the Elite 8 run.
Horrendous call just rewarded OSU 3 pts in like the last minute or so...Nebraska was through and through vintage TSJ...

Games didn't start until we were down 10
Good thing we cleaned that up towards the end come tourney time (outside of UConn)...

I agree with you but it's the nature of the tourney selection and metrics. Losses to 100ish or so Kenpom teams are far more detrimental than losing to a good team, so you see teams loading up with Q1 or Q4.

I'd personally like to see more games against good mid majors(let's schedule Loyola and schools like that) but it's the way all the schools are scheduling now.

Not that it means anything this early, but Lunardi has us as runner up, losing to Alabama in the title game in his preseason bracketology. And, he has us beating Arizona to get to the elite 8 🤣
Way way too early prediction …..
