69 years? You're an old codger just like me. I've been watching the beloved since the '52-'53 season. So who''s ahead? My math is poor, esp. since we've turned over another century.
We did not have a TV until 55 when I was 8. I remember the name Don Ohl, and Harv Schmidt was on that team, but do not remember watching them play. The first team I remember watching much included Govoner Vaughn and Manny Jackson. WCIA did some of the games...sponsored by Chesty Potato Chips. Though we only lived an hour drive from Champaign, I never saw a game in Huff Gym, but was at the first state tournament at Assembly Hall in 1963 to see Centralia get "Smedleyed". Still do not believe that play...the Orphans beat us in the sectional finals that year.

I know a lot of people believe this -- but I see no particular reason why.
Because it's not a belief. It's a simple recognition of reality. Is there a short amount of time between roster finalization and the start of the season? Yes. Do a lot of things have to go right when you have 10 new players and you lost an All-American 1st round pick and an All-Big Ten player? Yes.

It doesn't mean the team is going to be bad. It doesn't mean the team is going to be great. I do not believe they will be bad. I do think they can be great. If a lot of things go right in a short amount of time. Not knowing if it will happen is not the same as thinking it won't happen.

Had a 25pt lead evaporate in 5 minutes...looks like they're gonna win it. Not a real good second half for KJ IMO...but was great in the first half. Finished with 21pts.

Applicable to every other team in college basketball...

Where did you go to high school?

I know a lot of people believe this -- but I see no particular reason why. We've got top-10 talent with decent experience and multiple ball-handlers, so as long as the culture is right it is highly likely we will be a top-10 team -- and that good culture is just one thing right.

These guys will also have played a ton of ball together by March. The nay-sayers were wrong last year over the "no pg" story, and it is likely they are just as wrong this year.

Here's why: https://blog.evanmiya.com/p/how-to-build-a-roster-in-the-modern

Very intelligent people have actually dove into the data and done real analysis. Of course, it doesn't mean any outcome is guaranteed but there is plenty of reason to apply some caution to our optimism.

And the "no pg" story and the "lack of continuity" story are completely independent of one another, just fyi.

Every season there are droves of folks telling everyone that we shouldn't have a positive outlook on the coming season.

It won't ever matter how much talent is coming in, or how much scoring is returning, or who the coaches are, or anything else.

We could be ranked #1 to start the season and there will ALWAYS be devil's advocates and optimism-police.

Remember when UNC was preseason #1 and missed the tournament? Good times

Certainly applicable to a lot more teams now that we're living in the transfer portal world. There's no doubt about it. That's definitely a point in the Illini's favor. I believe it's going to apply even more to a team with 10 new players. 4 of them have never played college basketball and are going to play pivotal roles on this team. And, yes, that is applicable to many teams as well, I'm sure. I do love the roster, though. I believe the ceiling of this team is extremely high. They have Final Four potential, IMO.

No one is telling anyone they can or can't do anything.

But get mad, I guess?

I also love how the cautious people are the police/devil's advocates and not the other way around. Pretty funny, really.

Why would I be mad? I find it quite humorous.
