My best guess for now. With new reports weekly on who the best player has been in practice things can easily change. What a nice luxury to have.

At #19 our highest rated since Dee (#19 also?). What's crazy is Duke has #s 1, 4, 13, 17, and 19. And they do that year after year. If Wonder Boy happens to get them to the EE, everyone will be saying what an amazing job he did.

Obviously he could be better and by most accounts he’s been great so far in practice. But to just assume Tre is above Ty would not be based on any prior stats. I understand Tre was in bad situations and he also did perform well sporadically against good teams. Still previously he basically seems worse than Ty at almost everything besides being a better three point shooter. But even that it’s not like he shot the three well he just shot it. Ty outperforms him at rebounding, assists, 2 point percentage, defensive box plus minus, offensive box plus minus, true shooting percentage and effective field goal percentage.

pretty sure the all defensive five we would select would be: Ty, DGL, Tre, Booth, Morez - the same guys listed for the "bench five"...

and pretty sure the all offensive five we would select would be: Kylan, KJ, Riley, Ben, Tomislav - the same guys listed for the "starting five".

Now, whatever that represents - that might mean some good and some bad, all good and no bad, or nothing at all to make a deal about... - think some things are pretty concludeable: 1. we've got a lot of different pieces to do a lot of different things strategic wise, 2. we're likely to see a large quantity of "defensive sparks" provided off the bench, and 3. this team will be primarily very offensive oriented and has got some real good offensive firepower.

Just feel like if the D can hold up to at least average and at best good, a lot could be achieved considering how much offensive firepower there is.

My hope is that some of the "all defensive" five push their way (especially early in the season) into the starting lineup because of their defensive efforts....which should (hopefully) push some or most of the "all offensive" five to improve their defensive skills that will make us even better come Jan. and conference play and into March/April.

The Athletic just released their 2025 "Mock Draft" (no teams involved, obviously). Riley gets a mention but doesn't make the final top 60 list. One Illini on there:

#15 - KJ - a 6-4 combo guard who has thrived at every single stage of his career with Barcelona’s youth team. He won the MVP of the Zadar region of 2023’s Next Generation Tournament, then followed it with the MVP in the Belgrade section of the tournament this season while also making the overall All-Tournament team. Long one of the best passers in the age group, the Lithuanian playmaker has an innate feel out of ball screens, with the ability to find open teammates from just about any angle. His ball-screen game flows incredibly well off that skill, as he’s displayed the ability to hit 3s out of pull-up situations and drive all the way to the rim, using his strong frame to keep defenders on his hip. He’s an extremely creative guard with good footwork, good handle and high feel for the game. He could stand to tighten his handle a touch if he’s going to play on the ball long-term, but he is a strong dribble-pass-shoot bet. He’ll attend Illinois this year, where I’m expecting him to share a backcourt with Kylan Boswell. Jakucionis is my favorite among the members of Illinois’ loaded freshman class.

I don't even think he's trying to game the system. I think he feels the heat so he's trying to give himself an easy path. The irony is, if he drops one of those, that thing is going to turn into an absolute pressure cooker.

That's a lot of metric babble, but any numbers on Ty's shooting pct. would be absurd. He only scores on layups and garbage putbacks. And Tre is a guy who scores from all 3 levels--he's aggressive attacking the rim and knocking down mid-range jumpers. He can knock down threes, although he's certainly not elite in that department. And as for his defense, we don't know a damn thing about it.
