Game Thread: Illinois at Nebraska

Nebraska is nothing.
A 54 yard FG into a breeze isn't a good gamble with time left on the clock. A missed FG is actually a worse outcome than the turnover on downs.
The decision should have been to punt. It's a tie game at half if they play it conservative. Getting the ball to start the second half screamed for a conservative approach.

Agreed. Punting is the lowest percentage play there. A touchback only gains 13 yards. I probably would have attempted a 53 yd fg, but fine going for it as well, especially the way Illini are moving the ball. Just stinks the blatant face mask was missed, which also meant that Altmyer missed a wide open receiver up the middle.

than some teams sure. Not certain we are better than Nebraska lol. Their O-line is better than ours and so is their running game. I think they are the better team and playing at home with an raucous crowd, but I do think we have a chance.
I would love to see us dial up some more pressure against this little turd. He doesn’t seem very quick or agile back there.

Altmyer was clearly lobbying HARD toward the sidelines to go for it. Maybe it was a close enough call either way that they wanted to send a message to Luke that they had confidence in him? Just a guess.

Re not trying the long field goal - there have been zero touchbacks on kickoffs going in that direction. Nebraska kicker can barely get it to the ten. Gotta be a pretty stiff breeze.

I’ve been critical of conservative play calls but 4th and 8 near midfield is too much for me. I had the impression is was a shorter FG than 54 yds too. Apparently I was wrong on that.
