Coaching Carousel (Basketball)

That's not how it works though. The incoming freshmen can't just go back to the other teams that recruited them and ask if the can come play. The upperclassmen can't jump into the transfer portal and find a new team before the season starts.
Actually I think they can transfer. Very inconvenient - might set off crazy preseason bidding war.

Then again no returning stars. Brought in 5 transfers and 2 HS so they did reload.

Yes, I think there is an exception for head coaching change that would allow them to do so. But at the same time, other teams have their rosters set, have been practicing etc. - for a lot of these players it's just not a viable option for this season. McKneely would absolutely be able to find a landing spot if he wanted...which would leave his uVA teammates doubly screwed.

For everyone else, at best, your options are vastly limited compared to what they'd be in the offseason.

Being that its a football post, I'm thinking they're talking about Ryan Walters possibly being let go.
i mean, i don't know how that isn't abundantly clear. (not directed at you. . . )

I wonder how long they have after a coaching change. A lot happens in the run-up to the season and the first month or two that could create openings if guys really want out. I'm sure it sucks for the players, but my guess is the roster was more or less set and at least some guys were getting NIL, so expecting players to stay for the season maybe not as big of an ask as it might have been a few years ago.

Very unprofessional for coach to retire 2 weeks before season. Basically screws the university and players. Forces University to hire somebody that they might not have if given chance. People complain about kids being bad, transfeering every year, demanding NIL etc. They are learning this behavior from adults.

Associate head coach Ron Sanchez will take over the program for the season. Sanchez was on Bennett's staff from 2009 to 2018 before leaving to become the head coach at Charlotte for five seasons. In June 2023, Sanchez suddenly stepped down as the 49ers head coach to return to Virginia and become Bennett's associate head coach.

"I always hoped that when my time was done, whether it was Ron or Jason [Williford], the two associate head coaches, that someone would take this over," Bennett said, "because it means it's in a good place."

This timeline sure makes it seem like this was the plan since 2023 when Ron Sanchez came back on staff.

Heck of a coach, but also, gotta say that I am excited I'll never have to see one of his teams play in a game ever again. So many joyless slogs. He did give us one of the funniest moments in college basketball history when UVA was upset by UMBC. Watching his brand of basketball backfire on him as his team was completely incapable of making up a deficit felt like the basketball gods playing an impish joke. Live by the glacial pace, die by the glacial pace. But hey, he got that championship the following season. It'll be interesting to see who UVA gets.
I’d have to agree it’s kinda like watching paint dry. At the same time though, Blocker -Mover O, and Packline D are sound, principled and approaches. (So I’ve always been kinda torn about it.) I like when other teams play his offense better than the glacial pace he favors. It looks a lot prettier when others do it.

In a strange way. I kinda feel about TB how I feel about Bob Dylan. I love his stuff…but it’s usually better when other people interpret and cover his songs.
His lyrics and structure are brilliant but the singing is pretty rough.

I’m not old enough for the heyday of Dean Smith and 4-corners…in the pre-shot clock era…with the occasional single-digit final score…I’ll bet people lost their minds!

Yea it’s got that feel to it….with a late resignation from Bennett, the University and AD really have little choice but to promote from within the ranks for this season, and then conduct the search at season’s end…if the team and Sanchez meet expectations then it’s probably a non story and Sanchez is given the keys… but if not…????

Sanchez posted a 39-51 conference record at Charlotte. Not exactly awe-inspiring.

Bennett brought in 2 HS recruits and 5 transfers this offseason. If Bennett told them he was doing this and they still came, and also told his returning players while they still had a chance to enter the portal, then good on him. If not, then he basically chose to lie to 13 scholarship athletes in order to help out his buddy.
I don't really know tbh but I'd imagine he was on the fence after last season. Maybe this off-season broke him and he just wants to retire but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a sudden decision two weeks before the season starts but instead a delayed decision to get his buddy a shot.

If he had walked away even in say July/August which is after the usual period it would've allowed Virginia sometime to conduct a coaching search and potentially get a very well regarded assistant coach from a power program or a smaller school coach that can't turn down the money/opportunity.

Waiting until mid October basically guarantees that his long time guy gets at least a year.

Though part of me is also surprised that he is ok going out with the worst game I've ever watched.

No way Sanchez gets job if Bennett quits in April 2024. Heck Sanchez might have been let go in Charlotte. He did nothing there in 5 years. I suspect he wil just be interim coach while UVA looks for somebody better.

If UVA job was open they would have been looking at Dustin May (FAU to Michigan), Eric Musselman (AR-> USC) , Pat Kelsey (College of Charleston-> Louisville), Steve Lutz (western kentucky->OK state),

Odd timing...it will be interesting to see what the reason is.
IIRC his dad stepped down as HC at Wisconsin a month into the season, for health reasons. Apparently not the case here so maybe succession motivation?
