Three weeks before the season starts. Hope everything is OK.The Coaching Carousel thread is closed but Tony Bennett is retiring.
Heck of a coach, but also, gotta say that I am excited I'll never have to see one of his teams play in a game ever again. So many joyless slogs. He did give us one of the funniest moments in college basketball history when UVA was upset by UMBC. Watching his brand of basketball backfire on him as his team was completely incapable of making up a deficit felt like the basketball gods playing an impish joke. Live by the glacial pace, die by the glacial pace. But hey, he got that championship the following season. It'll be interesting to see who UVA gets.
Saw this the other day... Then today, he retires? Will be super interested to see what is going on.
Only 55. Says not health related. Probably just does not want to deal with portal and NIL. Entirely new job. However there will be plenty of new candidates for his $4.2M salary. Won championship in 2019.The Coaching Carousel thread is closed but Tony Bennett is retiring.
Their brand of basketball was not that fun to watch but that championship team was exciting enough to watch with De'Andre Hunter, Kyle Guy, and Ty Jerome. Very good team that played great team basketball. The recruiting just hasn't been there lately due to his inability to grow with the NIL/Transfer Portal era. Part of that has to do with the school that he's at but it seems like he's had a tough time adjusting just like other coaches(Izzo for example). Timing seems poor for the players more than anyone else. They committed to play for Bennett, not for an assistant coachHeck of a coach, but also, gotta say that I am excited I'll never have to see one of his teams play in a game ever again. Stunner: UVA coach Tony Bennett to retire immediately
In a stunning announcement, the University of Virginia has announced basketball coach Tony Bennett will announce his immediate retirement on Friday in an 11 a.m. press conference.www.pilotonline.com
Hopefully just tired of the craziness. I'd hate for it to be health related.Odd timing...it will be interesting to see what the reason is.
It really is the wild west right now. But if it's going to be the wild west for a bit, I am glad we have a coach who seems to be good at riding that wave rather than one stubbornly trying to fight it, even if he doesn't really like it.It seems like that's what it is and frankly, I don't blame him.
College basketball needs more Tony Bennetts and less Dan HurleysMet him at the Vegas tournament a couple years ago. Super nice guy. Also hope it's neither health nor something nefarious, but these 'effective immediately' announcements rarely come without baggage.
Bennett will earn generational wealth off the sport. I struggle to be sympathetic to coaches who can't handle players making their fair market value. It really is the wild west right now. Bennett's style was soul stealing, unappealing basketball anchored in the 1950s. Hurley is pompous, but a great all around coach.College basketball needs more Tony Bennetts and less Dan Hurleys
Have guns, will travel (to wherever the top recruits are).It really is the wild west right now. But if it's going to be the wild west for a bit, I am glad we have a coach who seems to be good at riding that wave rather than one stubbornly trying to fight it, even if he doesn't really like it.

This. College basketball at the high D1 level is no longer about developing players into your system. He doesn't have a system that highlights individual players and that has to be an enormous challenge when it comes to the portal.Only 55. Says not health related. Probably just does not want to deal with portal and NIL. Entirely new job. However there will be plenty of new candidates for his $4.2M salary. Won championship in 2019.
