ELMONT, N.Y. — The Blues must not be morning, or afternoon, people. Because they started groggy in an 11:30 a.m. (Central) start, and pretty much stayed groggy most of the game.
The result was a 2-1 loss Saturday to the New York Islanders at the brand new UBS Arena. The Blues (32-16-6) have won only two of seven afternoon games this season (2-3-2). They will try to escape from New York — or at least the greater New York area — with a point or two Sunday in New Jersey against the Devils.
Viewer discretion is advised. It’s another afternoon contest, with a noon start Central time.“Flat for a couple periods,” an obviously unhappy Craig Berube said. “We woke up, started doing things right. Pressuring. Had some opportunities. And made it a one-goal game.”

Way too late. The Blues have one of the NHL’s most potent offenses, but the Islanders’ tenacious, positionally sound defense took most of the bark and bite out of the St. Louis attack Saturday. You know it’s not a good day for your offense when the opposing team has twice as many goals disallowed as you score.
Yet one team was ready from the start. The other team, not so much.
Case in point: The Blues went on the power play just 25 seconds into the contest when the Isles’ Brock Nelson went off for hooking Torey Krug. But the only two shots on goal during the two-minute minor were taken by the Islanders, which isn’t the way power plays are supposed to work.

I just never felt the Blues had a good chance to tie or win the game based on effort , especially that of the Islanders.......They controlled the game with their tight forecheck and backchecking .........

Fast turn around ........Hope Husso is in goal today .....

Devils lead the Blues 1-0 after 1..........................................

Continued slow play by the Blues until the final 30 seconds of the period , with the Blues scoring a goal.................Alas , it was in AFTER the horn , so still down 1-0....

8 of the last 9 games have been on the road and you can see it in the Blues play the last 2 1/3 games................Shots on goal by the Blues are way down .....blocked Blues shots are way up........................very little pressure by the Blues protecting their own blue line ......

Devils , like the Rangers and the Islanders seem faster with better puck control than the Blues......

Devils lead now 2-0 after 2nd period...

Blues did NOT get a shot on goal until 1 minute remained in the period..........This is gutwrenching to watch .......Slow skating .......lack of sustained puck control and cycling in the Devils zone ....

Just another damn boring Blues effort.........................

For coach Craig Berube and the Blues, it has been an ongoing quest this season to find a combination that clicks on the fourth line. Never an easy task, considering that when injuries or illness strike, the fourth line is usually cannibalized to help in other areas. Even so, the search continues after a 3-2 overtime loss Sunday to the New Jersey Devils – a game in which the fourth line was on the ice for both New Jersey goals in regulation.

To that end, Klim Kostin and Dakota Joshua have been sent down to the Springfield Thunderbirds, the Blues’ American Hockey League affiliate. They are being replaced by Springfield callups Mackenzie MacEachern and Alexei Toropchenko.

Even the best teams hit a lull now and then over the course of a hockey season. And the Blues definitely are in one at the moment.
Until now, they had lost two or more regulation games in a row only twice. Until now, they had gone winless for three or more games only once — a 0-3-1 stumble in mid November.
But now, just as the stretch run approaches, they are in a 0-2-1 dip after a lost week in greater New York. This is the time to gain momentum, not fall into a slump.
“Absolutely,” Blues captain Ryan O’Reilly said after Sunday’s 3-2 overtime loss to New Jersey. “And that’s part of why we’re so disappointed. We know we’re preparing for something and we’re just not doing it the right way now.

“It’s good that we’ve banked some points, but we gotta start winning again if we want to stay in the mix and set ourselves up and put ourselves in good playoff position.”
They have banked points for sure. Even so, they’re only five points above the current playoff line in the Western Conference. Any kind of prolonged slump, and the Blues could wake up one morning and find themselves out of playoff position. A sense of urgency is needed.

Blues-Senators tied 1-1 after 1..................

Senators had 2 goalpost clankers also................................Binnington in goal for the Blues , did ok....

Ryan O'Reilly has got to have the best stickwork in the NHL.....I don't watch a lot of other NHL games during the regular season , but the stick work he showed in getting the puck to Perron for the Blues goal was magical.........Perron's shot for the gaol was a backhand shot while skating backwards .....WOW

Blues only have 13 SOG ......a familiar theme over the last 4-5 games.....................Binninngton let in a soft goal for the 2-1 lead ....JMHO

The Blues had a few days back home after a weeklong trip, got to sleep in their own beds, eat in their own houses for a change, and when they went back on the ice against Ottawa on Tuesday, they found that not much had changed.
Their problems have nothing to do with geography. The bigger problem now may be psychology.
The Blues transitioned from a road-heavy stretch of their schedule to a home-heavy stretch and kicked it off with a 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators, losers of five in a row and the team in 29th in the league in points at the start of the day. The Blues penalty kill gave up two goals and then St. Louisan Brady Tkachuk gave the Senators some breathing room with a goal in the third before a late empty-net goal finished it.

The Blues have lost four in a row, the second time they’ve done that this season, and despite being at pretty much full strength offensively, have hit a scoring slump, with just four goals in their past three games.
The Blues are, by their own admission, in a full-fledged funk, with a strong foundation of futility. They didn’t create many chances, but when they did have them, they couldn’t finish them. But even if they had, that would have only covered up all the other problems they’re going through now.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can agree 100 % with the full fledged funk......................................First time i have turned off a blues game still being played in a long time .....maybe pre cup year..................

Rookie defenseman Scott Perunovich’s season is effectively over with the team’s announcement on Wednesday that he is going to have surgery on his left wrist and will be reevaluated in eight weeks.
There are seven weeks remaining in the regular season, so Perunovich would likely be out until the first day of the playoffs. At that point, he won’t have played in 3½ months, so unless the Blues have an extended playoff run, it would be difficult for him to play again this season.

Perunovich hasn’t played since Jan. 15 and has played just once since Jan. 5. The surgery will be done in New York.
It’s another setback for Perunovich, who missed all of last season after having surgery on his left shoulder in February (which, under COVID-altered schedules, was the start of the season) after having his college season in 2019-20 end early because of COVID. Because of all that, Perunovich has played in just 36 professional games, 19 in the NHL, 17 in the AHL, since his last college game in March 2020.

Consistency is a valued trait in the NHL. Coaches love when teams and players can be counted on to do the same thing, to be dependable and predictable.
Consistency like the Blues have right now is not what coach Craig Berube wants to see.
He ran through the Blues’ past three games, vs. the New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators, on Wednesday and the recurring theme was the Blues having the same problems and then repeating them.“We went out in the Islander game and we were flat,” he said, “made a push at the end and then the Jersey game, same thing. Just flat and we made a push at the end, tied it up, got a point and then we lost in overtime. Last night, again, we just were not consistent for 60 minutes right now. We’re not pushing for 60 minutes.”

“We’re just not doing what we’re supposed to do,” Berube said. “That’s a bad stretch right now. To get out of it, you got to work hard, you got to compete hard, and you got to play together as a team. You got to simplify things. It’s got to be more of a simple mindset right now. We got to make the other team defend more. That’s the bottom line.”

Complicating matters against the Rangers is that it looks like the Blues will be without forward Pavel Buchnevich, who is tied for second on the team in goals and is third in points, after he apparently suffered a concussion late in the Ottawa game.

Blues next game is tonight Thursday 03/10/22 against the New York Rangers at home at 7 pm CT

Blues lead 6-2 after 2.........................

O'Reilly scores 15 seconds into the second period for the Blues.......The goal on the delayed penalty call was , indeed , a thing of beauty later in the period.....

This has been the best Blues game in the last 5-6 games and not just goal; scoring ....they have outworked the Rangers on all facets of the game from dirty work in the corners to forechecking and backchecking as needed...

You knew sooner or later, the Blues would snap out of it. Right?
But after a series of pratfalls against the lesser lights of the NHL, who could have predicted it would come against the talented and touted New York Rangers?
Well, that’s what happened Thursday at Enterprise Center, on Grateful Dead night no less. With Pavel Buchnevich and Oskar Sundqvist out because of injuries, and Tyler Bozak a late scratch, the Blues kept on truckin’ in their quest for a playoff berth with a resounding — and yes — surprising 6-2 win over the Rangers at Enterprise Center.
Just as quickly and emphatically as their game vanished during a four-game losing streak (0-3-1) it returned Thursday to the delight of the Blues’ 17th sellout crowd of the season of 18,096.

Predictably, coach Craig Berube was pretty grumpy during the winless streak; with him it never takes a body language expert to figure out his mood. But he didn’t panic, he didn’t press — and the team followed his lead.
“I don’t know what panic ever does,” he said. “You don’t want your team to feel that, I don’t think. Things gotta be addressed and there’s a certain way you gotta play to be successful. For three games, we did not do that.
“So tonight we did it again and we were successful. But you gotta play a certain way and that’s the message that the coaching staff — we have to really drill into their heads. Guys did a much better job of it tonight.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In the five games preceding the Blues’ win over the New York Rangers on Thursday, they had scored just one goal in the first period. Starts were not a thing.
But starting on Thursday, the Blues have scored three goals in the first period twice to set the tone for their games. They now have turned both of those quick starts into wins after their 7-4 win over the Predators on Saturday.
“To outscore this team in the first period in their rink (was big),” Blues coach Craig Berube said. “If you look at their stats, they’re a good first period team. They outscore teams, and they don’t give up much in the first period because they come with a lot of pressure right away and they’re a heavy forecheck team, but we did a good job in the first period. We made plays, we handled their forecheck and we put pucks deep and went to work.

Husso saves the day

Berube broke from the alternating pattern he had used in goal for the past three weeks and gave Husso consecutive starts and while Nashville scored four goals on him, his play drew rave reviews. In the third period, with the game tied, Husso stopped all 10 shots he faced.

“He was fighting traffic,” said forward Robert Thomas. “A lot of tips he made big saves on, rebounds, stuff like that. He’s been great the last two games and all season.

NASHVILLE — Through two periods on Saturday, Blues forward Jordan Kyrou had not attempted any shots. He finally took a shot early in the third period from out near the blueline that went only a few feet before being blocked. That was the only puck he directed toward the net in the entire game.
“Sometimes it happens,” he said. “You don’t really get many chances to even shoot, so sometimes you gotta be a playmaker.”
When the Blues needed it most, Jordan Kyrou the playmaker took over on Saturday. With the score tied late in the third period, he held the puck on a break with Robert Thomas on his left. And he held it. Finally, with the defense having no choice but to confront him, and with Thomas having made a sharp turn to his left, Kyrou passed the puck across to his buddy for the goal that sent the Blues on to a 7-4 win over the Predators.

“He’s a big-time player and he makes a big-time play at the end,” said Thomas, who scored two goals for the second game in a row. “We’re starting to kind of find each other. I knew the whole way he was looking to pass. What a play by him and that’s a huge goal for our team.”
