How is it possible to get suspended for recruiting violations these days? practically everything goes. I didn't think the NCAA had any rules anymore.

At this point my guess would be contact during a period where you aren't supposed to contact a player or in this case since it only took him 3 days to commit they probably were talking to him directly before he entered the portal. Everyone knows you have to go behind the scenes not direct.

A punishment should be a deterrent. Even if Frerentz knew in advance that he’d be suspended for the violation he’d still do it again in a heartbeat because the payoff (McNamara) was worth it. So Iowa got their QB and Ferentz has to watch a game at home. Am I missing something?

Why didn't McNamara get punished? He didn't have to answer the phone or open the email before he went into the portal.

Absolutely, the punishment needs to be strong enough that it deters the behavior of the coach from the violation.

My favorite Iowa pastime is as follows.
My wife's whole family are farmers. Some that plant in Iowa and some the plant in Illinois.
The late night bon fires at their MN vacation spot, the conversation always ends with who is better and who has better ground.
While the IA contingent boasts of more acerage, the Illinois residents speak of higher price per acre and the fact that they grow food for human consumption, not animal.
While I know zero about farming, it seems as if the Illini growers always win the natty light fueled arguments. Every year. Same fight. I love it.
So yeah, Iowa sucks.

I think you are slightly confused. Iowa blows and Indiana sucks...it is why all the crops in Illinois point to the east.
