Is it possible that Jasper in '24 would be too much of a good thing?

He barely got off the bench for Team USA ...

I can just give a comparison but his number they are wanting NIL wise isn't that far off from Kasparas ...
It’s his shooting and strength that are deficient, he has to work on his game. What was his three point shooting percentage in the tournament?

His shooting and strength will improve but that’s what he could have worked on with the best coaches and facilities in college basketball here at Champaign. He needs to come back, get serious about it and work!

Reclassifying may become more common than it used with NIL the way it is today. It is going to be hard to talk a upper echelon player and their family to have a senior year in high school when they could put in some extra work and graduate as a junior and make hundreds of thousands, if not, millions of dollars a year early.

He looked a cut below the other backcourt options on that team for. JJ was much more effective and would be 100% more ready to play this year than JF. I like Fears long term, but his shooting looked shaky and his defense was very gamble heavy at this point.

The D reminded me of the early Underwood teams here, lots of turnovers forced and lots of scrambling to contain free drivers when no turnover came.

He's a small guard ... 6'2 in shoes ...

His shooting from deep has really, really fallen off this spring (20%) ... Think he's like 40% from the field ...

He doesn't like to play defense and he's not big enough right now to play defense against HM guards ... Especially these COVID year guys ...

And so far this spring/summer he's averaged more turnovers than assists ...

Now - I still think the kid can be a good player but none of those numbers scream I'm ready for HM basketball right now ... And they definitely don't scream anywhere near the asking price NIL wise ...

They scream to me he needs another year of development at the HS level and then more development once he gets into college ... Probably a multi year guy ...

But that's just my 2 cents ... 🤷‍♂️

You’re always right. I say you can add that he needs to get Fletched!

I hate it for the kid and all the players that may take the wrong decision and turn. He and guys parents need to be careful because the wrong school and system can cost him millions in the draft later.

He’s ranked #38 in class of 2025, per 247. Any idea what ranking he’ll have once he reclasses to 2024? It sure won’t be in line with the kind of money he’s asking for.

If we want to be mature about it, JCL was basically exactly what Fears is.

Groce brought a lot of talent to Champaign, not as much as he should have and he couldn't do anything with the talent he had, but it was there.
I remember saying that no one in the conference would have a better core group than our Nunn, Hill, Black trio.

We never got the PG to run with those guys.

If you listen to the Sleepers guys it could all be a sign that Boswell isn't the solution this year. It seems pretty obvious they heard the Fears rumor.
We will likely have to see how the freshman look but if Kasparis is as good as advertised he will be better than what I saw from Boswell at Arizona.

Now, there is no reason that they couldn't play at the same time but you get a huge matchup advantage from having a 6'5 pg and being able to run out 5 players that are all 6'5+.

I think the size and athleticism issues that last year's team caused for other teams is overlooked as a reason for their success. Opposing teams(except UConn who was similarly big but had an exceptional 7 footer) just couldn't keep the Illini off the boards or from scoring inside. The only two teams we really struggled with had 7'2 and 7'4 guys that went top 10 in the NBA draft(Edey was over drafted imo - also like our chances in a 3rd matchup).

Some combination of a 6'5 Kasparis, 6'6 Ty, 6'7 Tre, 6'9 Riley, 6'9 Humrichous, 6'9 Morez, 6'10 Booth, and 7'1 Ivisic would create huge matchup problems for most opposing teams.

Along those lines...just curious...

do we know when Riley's ranking for 2024 on 247 will come out? On3, Rivals have both updated him into 2024. Still waiting on 247.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not ...

There is a 0% chance Ayo was coming here with Groce as HC ...
Not saying Ayo would have come here with Groce at the helm. But I think being his second offer (and first real offer) was good.

Well he can get his bag for one year then portal to the Illini!

Appreciate the scouting report! If the Fears camp wants Kasparas money, his handlers must be smoking something good…

Hey… who would’ve thought Coleman Hawkins would’ve commanded $2 million back when everyone laughed at AJ Storr wanting one million. The price tags are skyrocketing daily, so you don’t necessarily have to be on the wacky weed to toss out an absurd number hoping someone will bite.

I'd rather drop that money on a proven player at the college level.

It would be a different story if you were guaranteed to get a freshman for 3-4 years but guys bounce yearly now so I'd take the proven contributor over a freshman every day.

Especially over a small guard that's reclassing. Feel like they typically struggle early.
