I would love to see us beat the odds and land Jasper. Is he a '24 or '25?

Some seriously weird takes going on here today. Upgrading the talent of the roster is a ALWAYS a good thing. It was a good thing in the past and it’s a good thing in the present.

If you don’t want to be “recruited over” then get better.
It's really this simple. The only reason some are conditioned to be against "recruiting over" players is because we haven't had a staff good enough to do it in the last 20+ years so we needed to justify our inadequacies.

Not recruiting-related.

Visited Atl over the weekend and saw this really tall family at the hotel breakfast. Then saw their son come down and saw him duck his head to come out of the elevator. On our way back to our room, got a chance to ride in the elevator with him and struck up a small conversation.

Turns out it was Zaccharie Risacher.

Did you get his autograph?

I say who cares. Don’t worry about the preseason ranking. Make it impossible for them to deny you what you think you deserve once the season is underway. Earn it.
Oh this Illini team will shock the world. I don’t believe many truly understand how good this team is. It’s like an international all star team.

Go Illini!

We were ranked 25th preseason last year. It was the 4th year in a row that we had been ranked in the preseason AP poll - the best such stretch in our history.

Yup. You're right. My bad.

But KU being #1 sure aged well...so did MSU being #4...so did FAU being #10...so did Miami being #13...so did ARK being #14...so did USC being #21...so did Nova being #22.

That's SEVEN teams that either...

(a) severely underperformed preseason ranking expectations...

(b) or even worse - missed the tourney...

(c) or even worse - became downright laughing stocks...

pretty concludable that preseason rankings hardly mean much in terms of projecting how a team's season will go.

Pre-Season rank means nothing. It is usually based on Name and last year. Kansas was ranked #1. They bowed out early in the tourney. This year's Illini squad is the most talented Underwood has ever had. If BU can mold them into a team, they should be better than last years team. With a little luc, they could go to the Final Four. Like Loren Tate has said many times, keep knocking on the door and eventually it will open.

It has lost a little bit of its predictive value with the introduction of the portal.

But it's generally been pretty good at identifying the best teams. Even last year, 13 of 16 Sweet 16 teams were ranked in the preseason top 25.
