Rogers is not a future pro. That doesn't make him a bad player or a bad Illini. Kenny Battle was an all-time Illini great. Never got a sniff at the pros. One of many examples.

AGREE/DISAGREE

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo has criticized NIL and the transfer portal in the past and doubled down on his stance during an interview with Big Ten Network on Friday. Izzo shook his head at players transferring "3-4 times" and argued for a cap on NIL earnings for student-athletes.

"I'm not a fan of the transfer rule," Izzo said. "If that hurts me in recruiting, that's a shame. It should help me. I look at these kids; not every place is for everybody. But when you're transferring 3-4 times, I wonder what that's going to be like for those kids later on in life? Every student needs a place to go back to. They're going to be going back to four different places? They ain't going to be embraced by all those people.

"I always believed players should get more money, but it went to more money than you and I make. I don't think that's right. Paying your dues and going through things is what's going to make you better in the long run."
I agree 100% on these points.

Changes are needed. Changes are coming. Hopefully they will be changes that will be good for the student athletes, and to the future of college sports in general.

This is common when you don't have a good argument.

Just razzing a bit... but I personally do not see how we missed him at all last year. We made an Elite 8 and RayJ was 3,063 out of 3,070 eligible players in turnovers per game.
I've been on your side all along on this topic, and still am, but it is just true to say he could have been a different player on the Illini, what with completely different players around him, perhaps being asked to do different things, in a different offense, with Fletch and our coaching staff supporting him,,, unless we want to assume that all things would have been absolutely equal between Baylor and Illinois, which obviously we don't want to do if we're making a serious argument.

Bottom line: we had an unbelievable year, and the corrollary is also true in that he could have made us worse.

I hope there are no more discussions about RayJ for the rest of this board's existence tbh.

What are our chances really ?,cause he can really ball.
That announcer might be just as bad as some of those guys on BIG+ tbh...

AJ def. got the ability to be one of the best players in the world one day IMO. It seems like him taking an OV here might be on the table. (?)

Do we even have the $$ for that? - the price might be around 2-3 mil.

But who knows...with OA anything is possible...shoot your shot I guess...?

I'd guess that if we have anyone of that caliber on campus and considering us, people that know people know how to make that money happen.

Dybantsa looks like the rare freshman that would be worth it and could lead a team on a title run. He looks like a number 1 pick.

Agreed.

It isn't a question of whether he's worth it or not...it's a question of whether we have that kind of $$ for an individual in us. Even if we have that it still might be a longshot, but that's kinda the 1st qualification.

There's always one or two freshman every once in a while that are that type. It's been missing these last few years. I'd say Cooper Flagg could be that level. Zion, KD, maybe Cunningham or Poalo...not syaing he's going to be those guys but got the potential 4sure...

If Kansas state can come up with 2 million for Coleman Hawkins I'm sure Illinois with Khan, Siebel, and it's plethora of tech multi millionaires can make it happen.

Even Jerry Colangelo played here though he seems more wrapped up with the Grand Canyon scam.

Izzo is worth 13M and spent his career benefitting from having full control while being close to a major talent center & free labor.

He's upset that the system changed and he no longer has those built in talent advantages and that players now have power.

He is literally entirely wrong. And whiny.
So you think it is good for an athlete's education for students to transfer every single year?

Education is part of the benefit package but certainly not the main part & plenty of folks graduate with credits from different schools.

Do you really think Izzo focuses on the MSU education in his pitch to recruits? They care so deeply that their official roster doesnt list majors or have them in the bios for 99% of players.

"Come to the 13th best school in the big ten for a degree we wont even care enough to tell people about"

Wow, I had to watch that twice. Seems to have the movements and feel that I saw in young MJ when he arrived at North Carolina. Looks strong, coordinated, and has the confident “it” factor. Does he have the skill? I haven’t seen enough of him to warrant the full comparison.

Education is definitely the main part for the vast majority of D1 athletes.

Good point. Posters here tend to cherry pick only citing the Mock drafts that have them high.
If Kasparas has a Deron Williams 04-05 type year and I believe he will (he is that good) and Will Riley has a Nick Anderson, Shannon type year, both will be gone after 24-25 season and both could easily be 1st round NBA picks. I hope they do as that means Illini will be very, very good, especially if Ivisic, Boswell, Rodgers, Humrichous, White, Johnson, Booth and DGL play up to their potential by tail end of the season.

If NIL World is about the creative movement of large amounts of money through non-profit organizations with little transparency, let's just say principal figures at BYU are competing with, for starters, a serious experience advantage.
I could see a future in which a School of Scientology becomes a D1 powerhouse in this environment and fields a team of burger boys every year.

All that $$ you give to get your Thetan levels up will do wonders for our basketball program!
