I’m assuming Franklin is confirmed and they might just be spacing out the announcement for PR reasons.

Bret is no where near the hot seat …

The new Big Ten hurts our ceiling a little bit for sure … It’s a different job than the one he originally took …

6-6 is the expectation here … Bret knows that …

He has really done well rebuilding his staff after transition … He pulled the plug on Petersen right away … Most guys wouldn’t have done that … He made the change with Fenelus right away as well … He is the best coach we’ve had in a long time …

And he’s done very well in state … IMO … Now we need to lock down Mt Zion boys and I’ll be even happier … But he’s recruited well … My knock has always been … Spoon, Quan, Syd … To the league and we can’t recruit DB ??? A Hen shut me up today … We need more kids like Brooks …

Our offense will be very, very good next year … Best OL Bret has had … Adding Franklin to the WR room is a BIG add … Luke with another year in the system … We’ve got an absolute stable in the backfield … TE might be our weakest spot but Rusk is serviceable at a minimum … They are high on Boyer if he can stay healthy …
You had said that Brett knows that 5 - 7 won't cut it like there are consequences for not getting to 6 - 6. I guess I asked the wrong question. Are there consequences if he goes 5 - 7 or worse? My concern was that there was pressure being applied to early in the process. I agree he's the best coach we've had in a long time and I really don't know how we would get a better coach with our recent history. And I feel like we are still in rebuild mode at this point and probably will be for another few years. The 8 - 5 record in 2022 was probably fools gold for us and got our hopes up to early. I have complete faith in Brett to get this ship righted in due time. We didn't get to the dumpster fire that was Illinois football over night and it's not going to be a fast turnaround. I see us at the first step of a rebuild in just being competitive and looking competent every game. I think we are headed for good things in the future.

Brooks for Nicholson, Tobe, and McCantos is a fun hypothetical trade. Brooks is undoubtedly an upgrade. He’s the most trustworthy secondary piece on the roster, health and performance wise. Would love another cornerback with experience and some risk (knowing that getting someone better than that isn’t practical). Just not sure another CB is possible with the staff targeting a couple interior defensive line players and Franklin at WR.

Great get by the staff.
Nicholson was the definition of anti-TSD. And our opposition knew and exploited it.

Looks like Illinois didn't make the cut for Broderick Shull.

scUMs so proud of needing 2 of the worst ref moments ever to win that game lol.

I literally have McCarthy's knee being down as a screenshot saved on my phone. They even reviewed it and still didn't give it when it's literally the most obvious thing.

Just for an example, go and look at the PU-SYR game this year. The same scenario happened and they called it down because a player's hand was on the ball and knee was down.

And then there's that pick play.

That game honestly might be the most sickening moment for me with both sports. There's losing and then there's getting absolutely robbed.

How long will it take for that to change because I'd LOVE to do better than 6-6. Is that Josh's expectation as well?

There is no way the expectation changes unless NIL funding goes up dramatically.

I'm not sure what people expect; this is all about $ now. Great coaching always helps, but the recruiting game has changed significantly.
Let's stir the pot on a Monday afternoon:

Would you leave football to the wolves, Vanderbiltification, if it meant basketball becoming a Kansas/Kentucky level predator in the NIL space?

I'll bite. My stance is this partially because I do not want to see Illinois lose status in a potential new P2 (B1G and SEC) if there is ever a breakaway football league.

I'd take hoops staying where it is (if that's an option) and push any more available NIL $ to football. I'd love to see us be an 8-10 win program with an outside shot at a championship every 10 years. We are on the right path, but NIL has really put a big bump in the road for us, I'd hate to see us take another step back.

I remember the few years in the Mike White era when I was a youngster, we packed Memorial Stadium and had some amazing Illini football games.

This might be too strong of a statement on this board but Illinois could wipe every dollar from the basketball program, give it to football, and it still wouldn't be enough to achieve that type of status for football.

Yes. It's not like you're asking me to abandon a perennial 8-9 win team. 30 more years of hoping for 6-6 vs. becoming an acting blue blood in the NIL space? Sign me up for the latter.

@Pikeillinifan we'd have to first have status in order to lose it. Eventually we will either be pushed out of the superleague or kept as cannon fodder for the elite teams. I've rather have a fighting chance for a championship in hoops.

I believe the correct interpretation is "a minimum each year of 6-6 and a bowl invitation." The real goal is to sneak into the playoff on occasion.

Bingo ... 6-6 with the every 3 years or so going 8-4 or 9-3 ...

It is going to be very difficult with the new Big Ten though ...

Prime example: I see 3 games this year that I can already tell you will likely be losses ... I don't think anyone expects us to dominate the Penn State, Oregon and Michigan of the FB world though ...

But last year ... It was all the close losses (Wisconsin, IU, Iowa, NW) ... All by 4 points or less ... There is your 9-3 season right there ...

Year before ... You lose by 3 to IU and 2 to Michigan ... Should have won both ... Especially IU and the zebras gave it to Michigan of course ... But you win those 2 games and you're a 10-2 football team ...

Kinda scary how much some programs and those that support them are willing to spend.

things are going to change soon enough and these current NIL & transfer rules will be modified in some ways .

we just need to stay alive in these current goofed up rules . It can’t stay as it is
