Love this pickup. These last few pickups are definitely an uptick from the start of the class. Badie, Pugh, Fries, and now Laughery are all big P5 prospects. This is a good place to build a foundation.

Another real good commit for Illinois. A kid that would have been ignored by Lovie and others… hopefully starts paying off even bigger in the future.
Probably not ignored, but 100% Iowa bound, nevertheless.

I was really hoping we'd get this kid due to coincidental personal circumstance! When I was in middle school I ran club track with kids from all over ECI, and my best buddy on the team was a speedster from Gibson City.

No measurement tool is infallible but there is a reason that recruiting rankings is correlated with team success.
Exactly the point I made with my full statement and think validates your as well. Go look at the Wisconsin recruiting ranks when BB was head coach. Not once did he have a top 30 recruiting class and he had 6 straight winnings seasons, 6 bowl bids and 3 straight Rose Bowls. They were quite solid recruiting classes mostly in the 30's and 40's range with the last one at 65. He can recruit for his system and develop them. We have not had a coach who could do both since......

Mackovic!

He actually ran a 10.58 at one meet. That is elite speed.

He was a state champ in track in junior high. He finished like 4th in the 100 meter and 7th in the 200 meter early in high school and was part of 2 relay teams during that same meet.

He will play wherever the coaches see the most talent from him and possibly need. That being said I disagree that his size would hinder him from being a college running back. He is more like 5'11" 185 lbs. He still has a year of football left in high school and is a super strong kid (I did mention he can bench 225lbs before).

Feel like I need a disclaimer for this message on the board: I am saying this in a high school reference and not that it will translate to college. I see his size, strength and game similar to a Christian McCaffrey mold. Track speed, super shifty, super strong, same height and build around that time.

WR Shawn Miller to announce on Saturday. A top 500 guy. Indiana, MSU, Arizona, W Virginia, and Illinois in his top 5. We would have an outstanding WR room with him at the top. MSU sounds confident, but no crystal balls yet.
This would be "quite the catch" if BB and McDonald can land Miller. Looks like another kid that is probably better than his ranking and fits the tough mold.

Mackovic!
Mackovic actually had a top 20 class his last year here. His other classes were middling however. He redshirted just about everyone and had an excellent developmental coaching staff. Having Tepper as HC cost us a minimum of 2 games/year; with better coaching Mac's recruits would have finished their Illini careers having won no fewer than 7 or 8 games/year

You're right that ignored is perhaps an overly strong term, but the likelihood that Lovie (or even someone on his staff) ever stepped foot in GCMS was basically 0%. And that's probably true for Fenwick (Pugh), Oswego East (Badie), JCA (Anderson & Hood), Brother Rice (Boyer), Rochester (Beatty), or Iroquois West (Leonard).

I believe I remember an interview in the final days of Lovie's tenure indicating they didn't even make it into Loyola Academy for a visit for quite some time...crazy thinking that was an ex-NFL alumni HC to boot.

The time that means the most will be his 40. If he can crank out a sub 4.4 then he will will be a real asset at any position on the field.

kind of looking forward to hearing about us landing a couple studs on DLine or linebacker - we seem to not have rec'd any prep commits from that side of the ball lately

I would imagine that he was clocked for the 40 while on campus for visits but JMO. He was offered a scholarship so am sure he wasn't to slow

That is a pretty rude that you would assume he had average or worse coaching. What is the basis fir this statement?
He was talking about the high school track coach and not the football coach to clarify for those not sure. That being said it is just a random ignorant comment you will find on the boards. He actually has been training with The Vipers Track Club for years in Urbana as well. They are not affiliated with any high schools and looks like they help train at multiple age groups. He is actually pictured on the Facebook page at random times in the past.

That is true - my bad. I assumed his only track experience was with GC. It's harsh, but as a rule of thumb 1A schools don't have much competition and don't have great facilities or coaching, especially compared to what he will receive at a P5 school.

Laughery couldn’t concretely say which Illinois coach has been his main recruiter because “I’ve heard from everybody on a regular basis,” though he highlighted running backs coach Cory Patterson, wide receivers coach George McDonald and Bielema himself as the Illini representatives he’s spoken with most often.

“Not to speak negatively on anybody else, but before this new staff, that was definitely not a thing,” Laughery said. “To be honest, if Coach B and his staff wouldn’t have came here, I probably wouldn’t be going to Illinois.”

Life lesson young man, anything said before a but in the same sentence is immediately nullified. That said in this case...I get it.

I was wondering the chances we had last week. The more I’ve read it sounded like WV was leader but now things are looking up for the Illini.

Werner seemed like we had a real chance, but it just doesn’t feel like it will fall our way to me. I will happily be wrong again. The guy is the real deal and I think could be a star for us.
