I see the point you guys are making. But I don't think it stings. He was never considering us. The one that stung bad to me was Ford. I thought we had a great chance to get him. Then he committed to Arkansas. Now he has re-opened his recruiting. But unless we sign some 4 and 5 star players out of nowhere or win 10 games this year. I don't think he will consider us. That stings to me. Because neither of those will probably be happening this year.

Or the guy from Tuscola who commited to Ok St. That wasn't ideal either.

I agree I would love to land Ford some how, but to me that really doesn't sting that much, just because its tough to get kids of that talent. he is one of if not the top TE out there so always going to be tough to land that kind of Kid. Personally I want V Brown more then Ford any how, even more then Griffith. I say this because the OL/DL will win us a heck of a lot more games, or lose us a lot more, then TE's or DB's I would like to land J Slaughter as well

"I just went on the college visit and talked to the running backs coach (Thad Ward), talked to the OC (Garrick McGee) and the head coach (Lovie Smith)," Norwood said. "They showed me around campus, and I decided that's where I wanted to be."

"I got a great fell for the campus, great feeling and felt like I was at home," Slaughter said. "When I talked to Coach (Lovie) Smith the first thing I told him I was committed to the university of Illinois."

I think bot are really good gets, watching Norwood, I was most impressed with his blocking as dumb as that might sound to some. not many RB coming out of High School have ever really had to do it , so it is good to see .

Slaughter I think is a very big get. just keep on adding those BIG OL guys. He needs to get stronger but they all do

So neither of these kids even have a rating with rivals? Belleville Althof is a good program and he definitely has the size. Didn't like his offer list. Hopefully they both haven't been evaluated much?

I can't find a rating for Norwood by any service at the moment. He doesn't even have a 247 page right now. I'm sure that will change quickly.

I for one am just not worried about the stars and all that. I have faint in both our football and basketball staffs to know what they are looking for.

I don't have quite as much faith as you. I believe last years team could have performed better. I also think you need to have some talent to compete and so far every recruit for 2018 hasn't been rated??? We need to get some descent talent to move the arrow up. Not every recruit can be one that nobody else has evaluated. By the way welcome to both of these young men! I hope they are all conference players!

A far as last year goes, I would ask you this. Have you ever played a sport that after you played it a couple years changed coaches ? Add that to really playing with either a QB who wouldn't ran 10 steps to pick up a $100 buxs let alone 5 yards, or a kid who had not even really practiced with the 1st or 2nd team. The more guys you have who already know the system the easyer it is for the new guys to learn it, because they can help teach it, as well as coachs don't have to spend as much time teaching it to them and have more time to work with the FR. I think Taylor is a very good QB I do not think there is 40 better then he is.

Just curious if you look at their over all rank or Pos rank ? I look more at pos ranking if anything and figure if we can get any ranked 128 or better then your getting a D1 kid

Lovie has to grab recruits, his cupboard was bare, and until we win, which sooner the better, will improve the players. Illinois football is down, and these big recruits are going where they get chance for the BCS , we need to make a bowl game just so they start looking, making a bowl game would help. Walk before we run, these recruits are good, hope we keep getting more.:chief:
Not stating anything all don't already know. Grew up with Illinois football in early 70's . It was worse.
Welcome new recruits.

yeah but that lead to the 80s and that sure was fun in both football and basketball, I think we are going to get back to that soon in both.

I really like the commit by Slaughter! It was just a matter of time before more offers were coming his way. Now we need a couple of DL's:ms:

I don't think there's much doubt Slaughter is a legit B1G prospect. Never seen Norwood though. Bit off the radar I think but that can happen with camp commits. That's why you have the camps.

The young men who are committing to Illinois have something in common with Illinois. They're unproven, and have something to prove. Lovie can't waltz into their homes and say, "Come play with a surefire winner." He says, "Come help make us be winners."

On the other hand, the blue bloods can afford to look over the late bloomers and the kids who for some reason or another haven't had a chance to put it on the field with a "name" high school.

We're both taking a leap of faith. We're saying, yeah, we saw you at camp and we like what we see for you as a future player. We'll take a chance on you. They're saying, I talked with your coaches and I've seen what they're putting together. I'll take a chance on Illinois.

We don't have the luxury of picking high school stars who have already been picked by the media. We have to rely on coaches who can--or we, and they, think they can--spot talent. The players have to think they can see coaches who will be able to make the best out of them.

The coaches are taking the players on faith. The players are taking the coaches on faith. What the heck, let's join the party.

Last year's team could have done better?

The QB situation was a train wreck. Arguably, the best QB play the Illini got all year was when Crouch was healthy. George is just not very good, and neither was Lunt. Lunt was the most immobile Quarterback since the 48 year old George Blanda played for the Raiders.

The offensive line was half very young, and half not very good (the experienced players)...Joe Spencer was an average player and an exceptional man, but this year's offensive line should be much better.

The defensive tackles were very young, and the ends were very good. This year, the defensive line should have better balance, albeit without the upside of Smoot and Phillips.

The wide receiver corps was as poor as I have ever seen it at Illinois. Our one true WR had to do it all. He's a senior now and should be much better playing beside Dudek and a couple of the incoming freshmen show promise.

Furthermore, the entire team was adjusting to new schemes on both sides of the football. The returnees should be much more comfortable in their responsibilities this year.

That being said, the schedule is so tough that repeating the same record with closer results in the losses might be as well as this year's team can do.

I agree completely.

Degardless of record this year. If guys like Nelson, Green, Watkins, Milan, Megs, Solomon, Palmer, Thieman, Corbin aka that core of young players begin to develop and show vast improvement.....after this year pair them with Lovies first recruiting class and then the 2018 class and that's when I will be a lot more judgemental when it comes to wins and loses.

I will believe in the staff and their choices until then.

Never seen Norwood though. Bit off the radar I think but that can happen with camp commits. That's why you have the camps.

Not to be "one of those" but he was not a "camp commit". He was offered back in May and committed during an unofficial visit which happened to coincide with a camp that he was not participating in. Slaughter and Walker were the ones who received "camp offers".

Norwood is Lamar Jackson's cousin. McGee recruited Jackson out of high school which is how there is a connection between Norwood and McGee. This is how Norwood ended up on Illinois's radar.

He gonna play RB or WR for us ?

Heck he could end up a DB the staff is more looking for speed, and length as well as Size in our OL/DL Im all for it. easier to take a kid who is already fast and teach him how to cover or what ever same as its easier to take a kid with the size to play OL/DL and devolpe them then it is to take a kid and try to grow hm into the size to play
