Celebration Win GIF by Fighting Illini Athletics

We didn’t dunk the ball once today…

41 3s

WR 31 points

TI double double

KJ pretty court vision. Will chose to take over a game if needed.

My one concern. KB and TW

1-0!

Isn't that 2 concerns? :)

I was taking another look at how he got his points (very efficient catch and shoot off movement, multiple putbacks, in transition) and I noticed the play he got the 2nd 4 point opportunity was really nice. He sets a pindown for KJ to come up and run a PNR then Morez screens Wills man as he rolls and Will is reversing direction back up top. KJ and Morez's defenders are worried about the on ball pick and roll and then Wills guy is screened with no help for a wide open shot. Beautifully drawn up and executed with lots of counters that can come from it.
Was one of the worst, most undisciplined closeouts I've seen... glad he was alright.

I think the times this team may hit a wall offensively is against really aggressive defenses. In the exhibition you could see how uncomfortable they made us really giving no space to operate. Saw it a few times in this game when the ball handler was hounded as well. I am confident that can be overcome with more practice together as a team.

Where did all of those points come from? The offense never seemed to really run smoothly. I don't want to see what it looks like when it faces any semblance of a real defense. (Oh wait, I've seen that.)

Overall an okay outing. The defense was pretty bad outside of DGL and Morez.

Boswell was underwhelming IMO. Early on he passed up several open 3s to drive right back into the traffic that generated the kickout. He made a number of bad passes. That isn't counting the no look passes, which had he looked, he would have seen that they were off. They were caught by good hands on the receiver, giving the defense time to correct. They were not good (or even fair) passes. He did not seem to do a good job starting the offense either. Game grade: C-. I would not be surprised if he was down to 5-7 minutes off the bench by mid season. DGL is outplaying him on both ends. KJ can slide over to the 1. (Though KJ needs to tighten his dribble. Several Big10 guards will have a feast if he tries to bring it up alone.)

Now for something completely different

I tuned in 3 game minutes late and kept wondering who Genesis was. Eventually I figured she was an Illini WBB player. She did a god job, especially compared to the yahoo from a few years ago who yelled something memorable bug irritating (Schmack) every time we hit a three.

It was a great idea to bring in a member of our WBB team to do color, but I wish that every time they showed the two on screen, they would have a caption with their names also onscreen.

Now do the same for a WBB game with a MBB doing colors.

Overall it was a decent student produced broadcast,

I’m going to disagree here. In terms of draft value, it’s crucial to strike while the iron is hot. He’s not going to play like he did tonight every game, but if he shows out at times throughout the year he may be a projected lottery pick considering his physical gifts & age. *If* that comes to fruition, it’s a no brainer, even if he doesn’t get much tick early in his NBA career. Now, if he’s inconsistent and just shows flashes and is a maybe possibly probably 1st rounder, then coming back makes sense.

This is the age old argument. Do you go early when you're hot, or play longer in college to better stick in the league? Think there are examples of both situations where decisions were second-guessed based on what happened. Ayo seems like a success story of being patient.

Really excited about Ivisic, DGL, Riley, KJ and Morez. Ivisic and Morez compliment each other very well.

Ayo is not really illustrative to the point you're making, because he stayed not to "try and stick in the league" but to improve in skills that would maximize his draft stock. It's not like he projected as a lottery pick at any point and still came back. He went pro the first year he got feedback that he could be a first round pick (and he ended up surprisingly falling to the 2nd round).

First impressions on Will Riley are mixed. More positive seeing how smooth of shooter and doesn't seem to let defense mess up his shot once he decides to shoot. My one concern is that he doesn't have that downhill burst a TSJ had and seems kind loose with his dribble. Very small sample size so I have to see more and against better competition. I am worried his speed could be trouble against a physical big ten defender that will press the issue and not give him that space he needs to create.

With that said you see a lot players in basketball especially in the NBA who aren't lightning fast and still can't be stopped offensively. Such as Luka who moves a much slower pace but is effective at getting to his spots. Not saying Riley is Luka by any means but if Riley is able to use his length and pace to move off defenders and get to his spots he will be a very very hard to stop. He has a great pull mid range shot. If he can consistently hit that shot and then look for either a cutter or corner shooter off of it would make him that much better of an offensive player.

Excited to see how he looks throughout the non conference against all different levels of competition and if he can even just shoot 50% from 3 this team will be very hard to stop
