What's up with Kennedy Collins?
Also did Bruna leave the program?

Volleyball with 3 more matches this weekend. Should be a good opportunity to bounce back against some more mid-tier competition.

On a semi-related note, I've been working on a predictive rating system. As far as I can tell, nothing like this exists (except RPI) for women's volleyball - has anyone else seen anything?

It's still very much a work in progress, but always enjoy sharing this kind of thing, so here's a preview. I'm hoping to turn it into a full-fledged ratings site (a la KenPom or T-Rank) in the next few weeks.

Current top-25 for 2022:

Current ratings for B1G teams:

This early in the season, there's still a lot of noise in the ratings because teams have only played a few games. For example, Illinois moved up from 76th yesterday to 46th today, despite not playing... presumably because Washington and Georgia Tech both played and won big.

KenPom, Torvik and others typically use some sort of pre-season rating estimate to avoid this kind of noise early on. So far I don't have anything like that, so for the first few weeks, we get things like a top-5 Rice team.

Looking at last year's final ratings is probably a bit cleaner:

Things compare pretty well (with enough differences to make it interesting) to the final 2021 RPI:

Here's the current rating for the four teams playing in Dayton this weekend. With the continued caveat that this is still pretty noisy - it looks like a weekend where we should be able to get back on track. Playing Dayton at home will be roughly a toss-up, but the other two matches should be easier 3-set or 4-set wins.

Still working on the part of the code to compute "odds" for each match (% chance of winning, likely # of sets, that kind of thing).

Looks great daniel. Looking forward to seeing how they ratings shake out as the season progresses.

Illini play Missouri State today at 4, Nova tomorrow at 10, and the host Dayton tomorrow at 6. The first 2 are audio stream/radio only, the Dayton match is ESPN+/espn.com

Shaky first set but nice performance after that (after the first half set, really) to beat Missouri State. IMO a good example of why the set linescore (in this case 3-1) doesn't tell the whole story. Lots of 3-0 wins have been MUCH closer matches.

I saw on VolleyTalk that Maddie Whittington, redshirt sophomore MB/Opp, has medically retired from volleyball due to knee injuries. Tough break for her, wishing her the best.

If I remember correctly, her mom played at Illinois for a short period of time in the 80s.

Good memory! I had to look it up. Her mom is Missi (Wheeler) Whittingham and she played in 1984.

The Stanford @ Nebraska match was pretty exciting last night. TONS of service errors (I think it was 33 at some point near the end of the 4-set match?) but still some great volleyball. Much as I wanted to pull for the B1G, I was happy to see my other alma mater get a win and knock Nebraska off from their undefeated start.
