Illini Football 2024

How this has played out with Altmyer couldn’t have been any better if we go back to the end of last season and all the doubts that ensued as the offense exploded during his absence.

Elzy has potential to become a really solid target for him if they’re both back next year.

Because there’s only one QB on the field - it’s probably a mistake to leave if you are not a top 1-2 round pick with a clear path to starting. If you’re a late round pick at QB, not even a guarantee you stick in the league (vs say a 5th round WR pick that can move up to 4th on a depth chart and prove they can play). If the moneys right, feels like NIL would always be the way to go.
I don't think Luke will ever be a 1st-2nd round pick purely due to size limitations. Somewhere in the 4th-5th round would probably be his ceiling

Agree with this, a very rare sight for an Illini QB. Which,

<whispers>....are we 1000% sure we're not losing Altmyer to the draft?

I was an Altmyer doubter, borderline hater coming into the season in full disclosure. But this is the most pro-ready QB play I think I've seen from an Illini since Kittner, he's a player totally transformed.
This is a testament to a lot of hard work by Luke, but also to our staff's development skills. This is a pretty impressive improvement beyond normal expectations. We have a strong case to be made for development of WR's, DB's, OL, DL, even TE, and now QB's. Speaking of TE, I hadn't seen this interview of Tip before. He's a great interview:

Was looking at Luke's bio and realized his birthday is coming up on the 22nd.

Great interview! I haven't seen one of these before.

Eye opening response by BB when asked about his daughters and how often he's able to be with them. Having gone through a divorce when my girls were 5-6 years old and both of us (parents) moving to different but nearby cities (Phx & El Paso) I can certainly relate to how work/life sometimes requires huge sacrifices and how it can be incredibly difficult to maintain a healthy relationship with your children. I'm not sure if I should be giving mad props, or feel sorry for how things are. I guess I'll just do both and give BB and the rest of the coaching staff a shout out for their dedication and work ethic. I am very blessed that I continue to have a wonderful relationship with my girls into their mid-30's. Not everyone in those situations are as fortunate.

I think we will be just fine
Yeah, I get the sense that in today’s NIL world we’d have a donor(s) step up in order to keep our star QB. Much like it was reported that there were donors ready to step up for Domask if he was able to return. We may not be Alabama or Georgia, but I think our donors are smart enough, invested enough, and have deep enough pockets to know you can’t let your star QB transfer if your goal is to rise in BIG/college football.

It also comes down to the players making good decisions to grow in a consistent system or derail their careers. Luke seems legitimately happy here form everything I've seen. Even this season he's grown from "Can he be the guy?" to "We're going as far as he can carry us."

During a week where there is already an announced sellout, I'm left without much to do in terms of tracking ticket sales. One thing I did realize last night and could be worth tracking in the coming weeks: Illinois has a good chance to average attendance above 50,000 for the first time since 2010.

Counting the sellout this Saturday, we're averaging 54,500 at our home games this season. We'll need to average only 38,749 in our final two home games to end the season with an average of 50,000. That is going to happen. Below is a chart showing what we would need to average in the final two home games in order to reach attendance averages of 50-54k.

To Reach Season Average of:Average Attendance Needed Final 2 Weeks:
50,00038,749
51,00042,249
52,00045,749
53,00049,249
54,00052,749

Should be fun to keep an eye on this the rest of the year.

Regarding our DL in the future - are Bray, Farrell, Barna and Muragin (out with an ACL) all expected to bulk up to ~300 #ers? These guys are all long, too.

Also haven't seen Gentle Hunt with any significant snaps in the last few games - he would give us some more experience, if not size, up front.

Muragin was moved to olb

Very few head coaches would give a 30 minute interview to a couple of nerd guys during the season when there is virtually no free time. It's probably part of the plan to build support for the football program.
This could have been recorded during the offseason fwiw... I enjoyed it but I'm just not a big fan of asking people about losing loved ones unless you clear it with them first which I assume they did.

Bray, Farrell and McCullum are all players they are a year or 2 away physically. They’re just young players forced into action early.

Pretty much a guarantee that we will pursue players at rotational position groups in the portal to shore up depth. You just need bodies at DL/OL/RB/WR to see what sticks.
