I have a Riley comp. Feel free to blast me or ignore. But his footwork reminds me a lot of Manu Ginobilli in that it’s so jerky you can’t really predict his movements easily and he’s a 3 level threat who can pass

Just to keep the discussion from the last thread flowing:

I find it a little funny how much we've all pined for literally years and years and years at getting these stud freshmen a la Kentucky, Duke and now that we finally have, the tune has now changed to "well freshmen usually aren't that good anyway because they are freshmen".

I'm excited for this season (which isn't saying much... I'm excited for the season *every year*).

I see some Jayson Tatum in his game - similar body types early in Jayson's career, 6-9 guys who play on the perimeter, take a lot of tough shots that you think are bad shots, but they seem to go in, willing passers, etc

In the spirit of over analyzing a 46 sec clip - there was a lot to get excited about from that - Kasparas was doing Kasparas things, creating offense, great passes, it's clear the offense will flow through him this year. We have shooting galore this year and they seem to be moving the ball well and passing, just to hear Brad say he was happy with the ball movement and passing must mean they are ahead of where he expected them to be

Defense is a whole other issue given we only have 2 decent defenders individually (Ty and Kylan) so we're going to have to make up for some deficiencies on that end - but who cares about defense anyway when you are hanging 90 every time out!

Well this is going to certainly piss off some people in Bloomington

It would never happen and I have no problem with you or anyone over analyzing the short clip, but I’d love to see the reaction/analysis on here if they showed a 46-second clip of bad play.

People would be talking about the need to fire the entire coaching staff and predicting that we may not make the tournament….

I think Riley is gonna have the best freshman season here since Dee.
I think if we get a favorable ruling from the NCAA, Riley's gonna have the third best freshman season on the team.

(And if we don't get a favorable ruling from the NCAA I wouldn't entirely count out Morez either.)

I find it a little funny how much we've all pined for literally years and years and years at getting these stud freshmen a la Kentucky, Duke and now that we finally have, the tune has now changed to "well freshmen usually aren't that good anyway because they are freshmen".
In fairness, that accurately tracks the success level of those players in the Covid super-senior era.

The relationship between NBA draft stock and college success has never been weaker.

So we'll see how it all shakes out, but it's exciting to watch a team this crazy talented regardless.

Curious how accurate KenPom preseason rankings are considering they’re based on very little meaningful data for the coming season. So many people complain about AP preseason polls, but I wouldn’t be surprised is KenPom’s aren’t just as bad or worse.
I believe KenPom himself has been as quick as anyone to admit that preseason rankings are very variable, especially in the age of the transfer portal. I think he wrote a blog about it last year.

For reference with regard to last year's team, Illinois started at 19 in NetRTG, creeped as high as 31, and made it as low as 8 as the season progressed before finishing the season at 10.

Think you meant aren't, but yeah, I don't see how any preseason ranking could be accurate. They're usually a handful of pretenders that don't work out, and sleepers that way overperform, and the rest are constantly moving up and down around an unknown average. Still think it's fun to see what the crowd thinks going into the season.

There is value (fun) seeing what the outside crowd thinks going into the season. It just makes me laugh when fans get all upset because they think ratings/rankings are too low preseason — especially when they know the accuracy of those things isn’t great anyway.
