Conference Realignment, Naming Rights, Financing

My biggest concern with conference expansion is how do you decide a conference champion? With unbalanced schedules it is possible that there will be multiple 1 loss conference teams tied for 2nd

The tie-breakers seem reasonable IMO, although maybe there are some cases I haven't thought of that would give a strange result.

The tied teams will be compared based on head-to-head matchups during the regular season.
The tied teams will be compared based on record against all common conference opponents.
The tied teams will be compared based on record against common opponents with the best conference record and proceeding through the common conference opponents based on their order of finish within the conference standings.
The tied teams will be compared based on the best cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents.
The representative will be chosen based on the highest ranking by SportSource Analytics (team Rating Score metric) following the regular season.
The representative will be chosen by random draw among the tied teams conducted by the Commissioner or designee.

Nobody is going to care about the B1G or SEC conference champion where we're heading.

For the moment getting that bye is pretty valuable. But having cannon fodder as the 3 and 4 seeds isn't going to be sustainable.

I think we'd care.

It’d be hilarious if the conferences do form regional divisions and then play a championship game or something resembling a conference tournament. It’d be the same as smaller, regional and separate conferences. That would make this whole process everyone went through like scaling a 10 story brick wall, when they could’ve just walked through the door to get to the other side.

I don’t know. Just along for the ride. We’ll see what happens

Isn’t it funny we’re still talking subjectivity? Thought this was all behind us when the BCS and now playoffs were established. 🤪

"I think anything we can do to take the subjectivity of a committee off the table is really helpful," the SEC source said. "We may not be able to completely get rid of subjectivity the more we can minimize it. And so Tony Petitti's idea of multiple automatic spots for a conference has a lot of value. I'm not sure four is the right number."

On the contrary, the ability to be subjective has been critical to entrenching the legitimacy of the CFP. It was objectivity that crushed the public perception of the BCS. Computer rankings overruling the polls (which happened in 2000 and 2003) was catastrophic to the legitimacy of that system among fans, coaches, players, the media, everybody.

The absolute north star of the CFP committee from day 1 has been producing rankings that bolster the CFP's sense of legitimacy. Which is what made the Florida State omission so shocking, that was the mask off moment for the new college football world.

Obviously the Big Ten and SEC are seeking to empower their duopoly over the sport, and guaranteeing themselves 8 of the 12 playoff bids would be a hammer blow in that direction.

The underrated part of having four guaranteed bids in each league though is the way in which it would turn the focus of the college football world from the national picture (dominated by, but not exclusive to, the Power Two), to the pecking order within those two conferences. What's happening inside those leagues would become the only thing that matters in a formal, structural way.

Needless to say, that would be awful and another big step along our inevitable pathway of destroying the sport.

Having the whole sport work together under one TV umbrella rather than destroy itself competing for broadcasters favor?

I don't know how long college football is going to be able to keep the horses in the barn when the fire is raging on the sport. We'll continue to see lawsuits from individual athletes on any restrictions on anything. This "super conference" is nothing more than . . . I'll say it again . . . a minor league professional football organization . . .

super conference proposal is going NOWHERE . it’s not what the networks want .

would they like to get rid of a few schools in the SEC/BIG10 ? probably , but I don’t see that happening .

you can’t have schools in a “conference” with unequal revenue sharing and the Power 2 have no reason to give up money to schools not already in .

it’s all chatter with no substance .

Of course you can, and all of the momentum is in that direction.

I will be surprised if Illinois is getting an equal share of the pie as Ohio State in 20 years.
20 years from now is an eternity in this college football world

lets say 5-7 years - they will still be equal if both are in the B1G

Looks like Texas State and UTEP to the Mountain West.

Brings regional rivalries back into play, keeps the conference regionally appropriate. What the PAC ultimately does next is gonna be interesting.
Has Fresno State made a move?

Agree. The group involved doesn't appear to include people that are going to move the needle. Its heavy with affiliations with schools that could get left behind the with the current trend to P2. The only SEC or Big Ten affiliated person is the AD from Tennessee..

yea , noticed that too .
what’s he thinking ?

does he realize this “proposal” would take lots of money away from the SEC and his school ?

My guess is personal advancement. I went into the weeds a bit on his background. He's been at Tennessee only since 2021 coming from Central Florida and happens to be a Notre Dame grad. His dad was also AD at Notre Dame and while there infamously gave a 10-year contract Charlie Weis and hired George O'Leary.
