Not trying to make excuses for Memphis since it's likely a rotten egg. But with the transfer rules and international players, how do schools keep the academic standard these days? Or, maybe it doesn't matter since most players are only going to stay for a year or two?
If everything else is straight up professional, why is anyone trying to hold up the pretense that these kids are students?

Yeah, when Memphis was revealed as his destination I had some serious misgivings about that choice. I think he could have done much better. No clue what DD realized money/NIL wise, but I think he moved a little to quickly in making that decision.
Doesn't DD still have 2 years of eligibility though, or is this his last one?
Memphis has some pretty deep pockets for NIL and I like Dainja but he probably wasn't going to get a huge offer from a major program as anything more than a bench role (has a skill set but is also somewhat limited).

He should only have 1 year or eligibility remaining. He did redshirt in 2020-2021 but i don't believe the NCAA has granted anyone additional eligibility that redshirted that year.

However, they are supposedly mulling over a rule allowing basketball players to play a few games and still redshirt like Football. If that is passed and applied retroactively to Dain he could argue his redshirt year shouldn't count because of COVID and then retroactively apply a redshirt to his 2nd year where he played 3 games for Baylor before transferring to Illinois.

That's my stand, too, but I don't think NCAA is changing its rules just yet. I prefer the athletes being employees to students. However, I don't know what stops you from hiring a retired professional baller or a 28 yr old "non-professional" player as the employee.

To keep the money flowing. Minor league tickets are dirt cheap, and they still can't fill 20% of the seats in small gyms. A "university" team charges 5-10x as much per ticket and packs the arena.

I'm currently leaning toward making the FB and BB players employees, with the universities getting ALL rights per contract (No unauthorized media contact was a form signed on day one of pretty much every FT (tech) job.) If the player thinks they can do better, then they can go to the G-League ignite, Europe, or Australia. The draft clearly shows that players going those routes still get drafted. The NCAA problem seemed to be that they were viewed as a monopoly. With multiple other paths arising they _may_ be able to close this door via the employee route. Then one gets into the murky waters of employee non-compete clauses. Making just the FB and BB players employees also creates a clear line between the revenue sports and the non-revenue sports.

(Try two. Something went wonky on the first attempt to post.)

Dain is an old school 5 who can only score in the paint. He showed nice improvement his 2 years at Illinois and I wish he had stayed. JMO but I think he could have had similar 15 mpg role this season. However he went shopping for somewhere he can play 30 mpg I hope Memphis is that place. Dain helped us win a bunch of games in BTT and NCAA and I thank him for that.

Improvement past 2 years
- runs floor much better
- can drive to hoop

Need to improve more
- free throw shooting
- mid range or 3 point jumper
- shot blocking

Special award - Coolest name and great attitude!

Yah 15-20 years ago he could've been an All-B10 kind of guy but today's game just doesn't suit him well. I honestly thought he should've dropped down the MAC level. His post moves were fun, but it's always going to be hard for a 6'7 PF/C who isn't that athletic and doesn't have a jump shot to succeed at this level.

Dain is a modern day George Montgomery

Big Geo was about 6’7”, but played like he was 7’ . He was thick and sturdy .
A great Rebounder .
Terrible free throw shooter .
but he had a role for Henson & fulfilled it .

He drove around campus in a 3-4 year old great condition Buick LeSabre or similar .

You could probably count on hand the number of offensive rebounds we gave up when Efrem and George were on the floor together.

There is smoke according to our insiders.
I don't feel like paraphrasing, but there's some data in this thread and also '24-25 Illinois Basketball thread'

Closing this thread temporarily so we can focus the discussion in one thread. For discussion of the IL assistant coaches let's use the Illini Basketball 2024-2025 thread. Go Illini
