I’ve seen a few references to Serbia.

FYI, Tomislav is Croatian. They speak Croatian. Beautiful country on the Adriatic. Game of Thrones was filmed there.

Serbia is landlocked and they speak Serbian.

Serbia and Croatia have been separate countries since Yugoslavia broke up in 1991.

other than that though, they're the same

Most Croats are. I coached girls , but in 5 years I never met one that didn't speak English. Croatians, unlike Serbs were very European. I coached Serb girls also, but only one season. They almost all spoke English.

If that is how the staff feels, consider me surprised - Kadary is by far the better college basketball player right now and you are only getting either of them for one year. Yes, Kadary only shot 27% from three this year on low volume but shot 44% last year, and is an 80% free throw shooter - I wouldn't call him a "bad" shooter

And Kadary does everything on the court - 15pts. 7 rebounds , 5 assists, 2.2 steals , 80% free throw shooter and gets to the line at a high clip - he would be a huge difference maker - we already have good three point shooters, in Humming Bird, Boswell and Ivisic, DGL - getting a playmaker that can drive, get to the rim and finish seems to be the skill set we are missing and Kadary brings that in spades. It sounds like it St. Johns for him anyway, but he would have been the best get IMHO
How can you say we can ignore his 27% 3pt shooting on low volume, then point out he shot 44% last year, on even lower volume? The fact that his 3pt shooting volume is so low is the a large indicator that he knows he can't shoot and thus does not take the shots from 3. Richmond looks to me like a stat stuffer but not much of a shooter.

Not that it matters, because it doesn't appear we will get him, but I would have been concerned with a team with Richmond, Rodgers, White, and Booth none of which are good shooters. I don't expect Morez to be a good shooter, I don't expect Ivisic to be much of a perimeter threat so you'd have most of your roster not proficient from the perimeter. I do not think that roster works. To really hammer the point home, Richmond, White, Rodgers, and Booth have combined to shoot 130/420 (31%) over 9 combined seasons. For a team that shoot an insane amount of 3s, we'd have to greatly change our offense.

There is virtually no difference between spoken Croation and spoken Serbian. The difference is in how they are written.

I don't care about the outcome of that play, but the fact that he was on such a heater that he had the stones to try it, makes it one of my favorite plays of all time.
As I commented at the time, if I live to be 90 and someone mentions Dain, that's the play I will remember. The sheer chutzpah of that move: it was simultaneously joyous, breathtaking, and a bit crazy. I loved it. Not often you see that from a guy his size, let alone in a tight Sweet 16 contest.

I pointed this out a page or two ago and all I got was crickets. Even cited the same poster. I didn't write as much, though.

We traded 4 one dimensional old style players
-Sencire defense only
-Dain post moves but no outside shot cannot defend outside paint
-Amani undersized 5
-Goode great shooter, limited athleticism

Got 6 multidimensional players that allow us to play 5 out. Unless you have all american old style 5, this is the new way to play, NBA style
- Davis shooter
- White - defense and mid range game
- Booth - Stretch 4 mobility , very athletic, likes to shoot 3
- Boswell - PG who can shoot 3
- Hamrichous - big stretch 4' great shooter
- Ivisic - stretch 5, great size, can shoot and post up

The portal is brutal but we are better team with transfers than if we had stayed pat with Sencire, Dain, Amani, and Luke maybe just adding 1-2 transfers
True, but unfortunately we also have to replace the 4 other guys on that team.

I say the rest of our team should be required to learn Serbian.
Tomislav Ivišic is Croatian, not Serb. However, the spoken languages are the same. Serb is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, Croatian in the Roman alphabet. They fought a war! It is bad blood from WWII and economic jealousy. Remember the Balkans War when Clinton was in the White House? Might be good to keep that in mind as you introduce yourself. However, most young people under 30 get along fine.

“Serbian” and “Croatian” are the same language, except one is written in Cyrillic letters while the other is written in Latin letters (it was called “Serbo-Croatian”; calling it “Serbian” or “Croatian” is more a way of trying to assert more distinct national identity). Just saying

Kadary and Demin are both amazing players, but there’s a clear difference in ability. The only real advantage Kadary has over Demin is his ability to attack the basket and playing in college for so long. If we got Egor, he might not be the better player on day 1, but by the end of the year, he would have all American potential. Just take a look at how well some of the top freshman prospects developed over the year (McCain, Castle, etc). Also in terms of how our offense looks currently, another ball handler is a blessing and Demin is one of the best. He is so versatile that he can fit into almost any lineup we would want to play

If Illinois cannot add either Richmond or Lanier, the next highest rated guard/wing is probably 6'5" Wooga Poplar of Miami. He averaged 13.1/4.8/2.1 this past season, shooting 42.6/38.5/86.4. He played against good competition in the ACC, he's experienced, and he has solid numbers. Illinois could do a lot worse than getting a transfer in from Poplar.

Actually, 6'6' Minnesota guard Cam Christie is probably rated higher than Wooga Poplar. I think that Christie would actually blossom as a 2-guard for the Illini, greatly improving his ranking for the 2025 NBA Draft. Boswell as PG, the fast-paced Illinois offense, and body by Fletch would seem perfect for Cam Christie. But it seems like Christie and family are not fans of Illinois men's basketball? Maybe that can change....
Richmond should be the top priority. He's a legitimate all American candidate and he should bounce back and be at least an average 3 pt shooter. The toughness and physicality he plays with really stands out.

Poplar would be my second choice after him. Great shooter, good size, can get to the basket and finish. Just a very well rounded player.

Lanier just had a breakout year and has good size for a guard. Had an incredible year shooting the ball but does kind of have a low release. I would take him but don't know if I would count on him to be the focal point of an offense like you could with the other two.

Christie isn't coming here and honestly would be my 3rd choice of the group. Smooth shooter that can pull up off the dribble but did struggle to finish around the rim. Ton of upside but I would go with the proven vets in Richmond and Wooga.

Seems like the current focus is on Demin at the moment and he's getting mocked as a lottery pick so good upside there. If they do manage to reel in Demin I still wouldn't mind seeing them get a veteran guard to pair with him. Probably can't afford Demin and Wooga but would be very excited by the combo.

Some other cheaper options with some upside could be Jordan Lathon from Morehead st, Ken Evans from Jackson St, Miles Kelly from GT, and a personal favorite in Cedric Coward from EWU(stupid efficient possibly the most underrated player in the portal).

Could also see some guys pull out of the draft become available or even go into D-2 and pull a bench player.
