Illinois Football Recruiting Thread

Question for anyone:
Miguel Hermosillo, former UIUC FB recruit has been bouncing around minor league baseball for the last 8 years with some major league play. He now finds him self with no minor league offers and he doesn't want to play in Mexico anymore.

If he enrolled at UIUC in the fall (he has a 4 year scholly waiting for him) would he be eligible to play FB for us?

He'd make a helluva nice slot receiver.

If the staff felt he could contribute, he would be immediately eligible and have four years of eligibility as long as he is academically cleared to enroll and compete. The top two names to do this, off the top of my head, were Chris Weinke and Brandon Weeden.

Is this just a random football thought on a boring Monday, or are there rumblings somewhere that this is even the remotest possibility?

No rumblings, I just listened to a podcast where he complained about not being able to get a minor league contract and is just working out in Arizona hoping to get one eventually this summer. Apparently minor league rosters have been severely limited by MLB starting this year, making that less likely. He hasn't been able to hit Major league pitching, but says he hasn't lost a step yet.

He got a full ride four year scholly to UIUC with his first baseball contract so he'll likely be back to UIUC eventually, I figured he might want to play FB at the same time, was curious if that were allowed. He's got a few years before he's too old.

A former mlb payer monte Harrison is a walk on at Arkansas this year.

Can this be a new niche the illini can exploit? Mid 20s former minor league baseball players with a background in football? They’d be mature and developed physically. Zig when others zag. Just match the average minor league salary and who knows, maybe after striking out already at professional sports they’d know the value of a university of Illinois education, and stay all 4 years on the cheap in terms of nil.

I’m mostly joking, but maybe there is a diamond in the rough there.

Guys were trimming branches away from the power lines, got to my yard and woods. I talked to them to try and prevent them making things ugly. They did fine BTW. One pulled out his phone with an Illini background. Subject changed. His cousin is Blayne Sisson from Mount Carmel (Southern Illinois).

Pretty good when a kid walks away from a scholarship and 3 offers to play for the Illini as a PWO.

Your username, with that prose, is just... chef's kiss.

So for those wondering how our 2024 recruiting class stacks up compared to the rest of the B10 after Dennis has left, it's well, not pretty. And while 24/7 rankings aren't the end all be all, it's still troubling as the only team we'll have outrecruited is Northwestern, who just had the biggest scandal in school history, and we're not all that close to the other 16 schools despite this being a year after our successful season... Just troubling, especially if we have limited success in '25 recruiting.

What was our ranking before Dennis abandoned us?

Could be interesting to see this next to a nil list and see how that trends out, especially over time.

What metrics or method was used to determine player grades? There are a million, and most flawed in some way. I forgot the exact stats, but the % of “top 100” players out of high school not panning out is pretty high.

When I played NCAA football on PlayStation and I had a team rating of 86.6 and was playing one with a 93.0, I always liked my chances. Go illini

It's based on 24/7's composite rankings and uses a gaussian distribution equation of the following form:

Sum(1,n)=100*(x-0.7)*e^{-0.5*[(n-1)/9]^2}

Where x is the individual player's rating and n is the nth best recruit they are that you have recruited, and sum(1,n) is the summation of your entire recruiting class. Basically, your best recruits are your most important ones, and each progressive recruit is worth less than the previous one. So size of class will have an effect on your rankings as will quality of player.

I'm sure having fewer HS recruits hurts us some. Looking at average rating we are more in line with Purdue, MD, Rutgers, and UCLA. Closer to Iowa that we are Northwestern. Given BB's ability to develop players that at least gives me some hope. Still need to start reigning in more top end talent, however, and soon.

It's not as easy now to use BB's system of finding athletic diamonds in the rough because not only is that all football is now... you also have to pay them to stay.

That being said I still have a ton of faith in Bielema.
