Virginia's Tony Bennett retiring ahead of basketball season

#4

Saw this the other day... Then today, he retires? Will be super interested to see what is going on.
Heck of a coach, but also, gotta say that I am excited I'll never have to see one of his teams play in a game ever again. So many joyless slogs. He did give us one of the funniest moments in college basketball history when UVA was upset by UMBC. Watching his brand of basketball backfire on him as his team was completely incapable of making up a deficit felt like the basketball gods playing an impish joke. Live by the glacial pace, die by the glacial pace. But hey, he got that championship the following season. It'll be interesting to see who UVA gets.

The Coaching Carousel thread is closed but Tony Bennett is retiring.
Only 55. Says not health related. Probably just does not want to deal with portal and NIL. Entirely new job. However there will be plenty of new candidates for his $4.2M salary. Won championship in 2019.

Their brand of basketball was not that fun to watch but that championship team was exciting enough to watch with De'Andre Hunter, Kyle Guy, and Ty Jerome. Very good team that played great team basketball. The recruiting just hasn't been there lately due to his inability to grow with the NIL/Transfer Portal era. Part of that has to do with the school that he's at but it seems like he's had a tough time adjusting just like other coaches(Izzo for example). Timing seems poor for the players more than anyone else. They committed to play for Bennett, not for an assistant coach

It seems like that's what it is and frankly, I don't blame him.

Just signed an extension a few months ago. Strange indeed. Hopefully not health related or something nefarious in the program.

Met him at the Vegas tournament a couple years ago. Super nice guy. Also hope it's neither health nor something nefarious, but these 'effective immediately' announcements rarely come without baggage.

It really is the wild west right now. But if it's going to be the wild west for a bit, I am glad we have a coach who seems to be good at riding that wave rather than one stubbornly trying to fight it, even if he doesn't really like it.
Bennett will earn generational wealth off the sport. I struggle to be sympathetic to coaches who can't handle players making their fair market value.

I know it's a change in the game, but that's where having an adaptive & personable coach is ideal. Glad the Illini have Brad & Josh.

Have guns, will travel (to wherever the top recruits are).

If it's just because he doesn't want to deal with it all anymore, it's a really crappy move to pull on your players and everyone that works in the program right before the start of the season.

Old HC job
1. recruit HS kids
2. develop HS kids
3. HS kids have to sit out year if they want to transfer
4. Most kids used to stay 3 or 4 years.

New HC job
1. Recruit HS kids, recruit transfer portal
2. Re-recruit your own players every year and still have 50% transfer out every year
3. Deal with NIL$ demands
4. Many kids transferring 4X in 4 years. People will steal any player you develop with $NIL

Much harder job - every kid is free agent every year.

Still pays $2-$10m/year and you are famous.

This. College basketball at the high D1 level is no longer about developing players into your system. He doesn't have a system that highlights individual players and that has to be an enormous challenge when it comes to the portal.

He's not the first and he won't be the last to call it quits early.
