Can you expand? Winning isn't a good fit?
Never understood people saying that about Marshall. He may be a little brash and arrogant, but we had the nice, perfect-for-community, devout christian types in Weber and Groce and look where that got us.
Winning at mid-major is not what defines "fit." Many successful coaches won at mid-major and failed in a bigger stage. It also does not mean that a successful mid-major coach can do it with less talent. People often say, look at Coach XYZ (e.g., Marshall and others) he does not need 5* at Wichita State, etc. That comparison leads to faulty conclusions, because at mid-majors, you still need talent, but need talent compared to the other teams you regularly play in your conference.
There are some mid-major programs that have elevated themselves over the years to the point that they do get good talent, better comparative talent,
at that level. Some examples are Wichita State, VCU, Butler, Gonzaga, etc. I think coaches at those schools get the benefit of some of the work of their predecessors over the years (a commonality in the examples given above), but does not mean that they are bad coaches themselves.
I have no problem with a coach being a little arrogant, you need confidence and personality, without going to extremes, of course. I have no problem with that aspect, but Marshall is more of an introvert and that's his reputation in AAU circles. I do not believe he has the personality to be a dynamic recruiter at Illinois and deal with the powerful HS and AAU programs.
Yet, I think Marshall can be successful at P5, but more in a bigger name school, where the school reputation can give him an added boost in recruiting. That is not Illinois right now. Not a good "fit" IMO.
