Illinois at Penn State, Saturday, September 28th, 6:30pm CT, NBC

Bret Bielema on the road vs. ranked teams while at Illinois:

2021
W 20-18 at #7 Penn State
W 14-6 at #20 Minnesota

L 23-33 at #17 Iowa

2022
L 17-19 at #3 Michigan

2023
L 13-15 at #16 Iowa

2024
W 31-24 at #22 Nebraska

3-3 vs. ranked teams on the road after taking over a 2-win program. In 2 of the 3 losses (2022 Michigan and 2023 Iowa), we had those teams on the ropes and let it slip away.

I don’t know if we’ll have enough in us to knock off a top 10 team in one of the best atmospheres in college football. However, I’ll be very surprised if we don’t come out prepared and make PSU earn it.
PSU is way better than NEB, but mindset wise it's more of the same thing: limit the homerun plays - big plays, keep within striking distance, bend but don't break, give yourself a chance, and see where it goes from there. Hope we can do just that!

If you see cool Illini apparel that Illini coaches are wearing, especially if it has a retro design, odds are you can’t get it, lol. Nike will sell you 1LL1NO1S, and you’ll like it! 🤣
Ain’t that the truth. Someone ask Josh Whitman to get on the horn with Nike and tell them to revamp fan apparel. We’re so due for some new cool stuff.

Homefield Apparel has some pretty cool retro Illini apparel. Nothing that looks exactly like Bret's, but this one is pretty cool.

Honestly, this fear has crossed my mind, as well. Not much for conspiracy theories, but the inflated line almost makes me wonder if Vegas is expecting this.
I think Vegas has watched them kick the crap out of subpar teams and is overestimating their firepower. Similarly, I think folks are looking at our win over Kansas and feeling like we haven't "really" beaten anyone.

This is going to be like our game against Nebraska last week. The national media is going to see a traditional power rolling and assume they'll roll us, too. We're still being dinged for being Illinois, and honestly, I'm okay with it. I'm so happy with what this team has done so far, but I'm but sure I fully trust us either.

I am an Illini fan after all.

Frankly, I think we have as good a chance of winning as they do. It will likely come down to which team runs it's game plan better, has fewer unforced errors, and doesn't get frustrated during the course of the game.

We Illini fans rejoice with the pain

I think Brickhouse Tavern (connected to Wrigley) is also the official alumni association watch party. Anywhere with a couple TVs will have it on, though!
Was there for nebraska, great environment. Now that we are doing well there are actually quite a few official alumni bars.

This game will come down to if we can protect Luke in the pocket - if he has time to throw, it will be a great game, because I think we'll move the ball effectively

If he is under pressure a lot - this game could get ugly. As good as Luke has been this year - it's been because he's had clean pockets to throw from a lot more often, he's 4th in the country in PFF rating when he has a clean pocket- his stats while under pressure are just as bad as last year in terms of PFF rating

I'm not confident we can stop their running game very well, but I do think we can give them trouble with our pressure and coverage when they are throwing the ball - so can we force them to throw often enough to stop them is another key while we're on Defense

I think we need to score 30 to win this game, hence protecting Luke is the key to doing that, even if we have to add extra protection, I think our WR's are good enough to get open if given time, so I hope we're going in with that strategy

alright now we are talking! Apparel could probably use its own thread. BTW Fanatics-branded quality is absolute garbage. There's a reason there are FanaticsSucks social media accounts with thousands of followers and replies going on for YEARS. Gameday? I can never really find anything I have to have at GS. It's always "almost" cool. But that's me.

This is what I love about college football. Nobody really knows if Luke's jump is as real as it looks right now. Nobody really knows how good our WR room is or can be. There is just so many unknowns

When a college QB makes a huge leap from one year to the next, he is going to win games that you may have thought we didn't have a realistic chance. (Hi Nebraska!)

This includes the national media and predictors going off of previous performance metrics. It only tells you so much.

Luke has clearly made a jump. The WR room is clearly a difference maker. We'll know just how big soon enough.:illinois:

(And yes...the bold is me trolling myself!:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:)

For what it's worth my PSU fans here in PA don't think this will be a high scoring game. They probably have more faith in our defense than we do. They're also concerned about our passing game, well aware of Luke's abilities. It's a relatively small sample but they know Penn State...which also includes a lot of the same pessimism/frustration as we have in the Illini Nation.

Both Allar and Luke have been doing well in their 2nd years starting.
