Illinois 31, Nebraska 24 OT Postgame

Agreed. I felt genuinely sad that he was not able to make it work here. He is an excellent MAC coach, and I am glad he is finding extended success at Akron.
Right with you with this. I was disappointed that Groce didn’t succeed at Illinois, and I enjoyed that he got back to the tournament at Akron. My comment was a bit of a potshot that was unfair to a large degree. Groce did do some weird/cringeworthy motivational things like Fleck does, but Groce is a much higher-quality person.

But I still think my assessment of Fleck as a walking “Success” poster is absolutely accurate.

Same here. I really dug his "inspiring math teacher" vibe...until it became clear it just wasn't gonna work out.

Except Groce is actually a good person
The difference between Fleck and Groce is that Groce comes by his cheesy gym-teacherly motivational schtick totally honestly, that is the authentic expression of who he is, and it therefore ultimately comes across as endearing and relatable.

Fleck is a capital-F fake in everything he does, the artifice drips off of him, and it connects to his well-documented exploitative way of dealing with his players, it's all just a performance.

Given your team breakdown last week, and general openness to discussion, if you stick around for general football discussion that wouldn't be a bad thing for this board.
Agree with @Ramrod2010 . Please stick around, as you’re a valued voice from a similar team on a similar rebuilding path. Patience. It just takes time.
I'll peak my head in here and there, you guys have been great.

I do like to check out other fan bases from time to time, most are so absurdly homerism that it's tough to even talk to them hahaha! So when I find a board that's more realistic I'll come back.

Welcome to the B10 young Grasshopper.
I actually thought Dylan handled his first conference game pretty well. We certainly didn't lose because of him.

If you recall in my breakdown though, I said if it came down to a kick Nebraska is in trouble... Sure enough we miss one late in the 4th.

Man I hope you beat PSU this weekend. 🙏🙏🙏

You guys are going to be fine. You have a amazing fan base and love for your guys.

Husker fans don’t want to hear this... but it will take a bit more patience for the turnaround to take hold. You’ve already come a long way from where the program was under some very bad coaching choices after Doctor Tom left.

You’ve got some mojo back and fans are engaged again like they were years ago. And you have a future really-great QB to lead the way on the field.

No one will find a generally more respectful and fair fan base than that of the Illini and the Huskers.
Oh I agree. The meltdown mode the fans have been on the last 6 games are odd to me. We're in game 15 of the Rhule era. How anyone could have possibly believed we're "back" yet is beyond me.

It was actually super annoying listening to some of the talking heads say we were going to be 7-0 heading into Columbus. Especially knowing some of the fans were going to buy into it.

But I am a huge fan of Matt Rhule's style. I genuinely believe he is a developer of talent, and those guys usually won't fix it overnight, but they will fix it and it will last a lot longer.

I've said on here already but I've always liked Bert. He coaches tough physical football and to me that always wins with equal talent and sometimes with inferior talent.

We've been where you're at. We found the right coach, I believe you have too.

Husker fans right now are so very hungry for things to be like they were 25-50 years ago. But that just can’t happen any more. The strong Big Ten of today is not the small Big Eight of back then... the SEC is so very powerful now... and there are lots of teams around the Nation that are loaded with talent each year. In short, the Huskers can’t dominate like they once did. The Huskers can be great and get into the Playoffs in the future... but the old Husker way of rolling over everybody just can’t happen any more.

Many Husker fans are having trouble adjusting to this new football landscape.

Illini football fans have learned to be patience. Finally after many years of waiting and hoping, things are coming together to move the needle for the Illini football program upward and in to the Top 25. Illini fans like the taste of how things are right now which Husker fans years ago just came to expect for their program.

Between the successes of the Illini football program (of years ago)... and the Bears of the NFL who used to dominate the NFL like few have many moons ago before any of us were born... football passion runs deep in the Prairie State. Both the Illini and the Huskers have a common goal to reach the level of those couple of Big Ten programs (that will not be named) that National attention has always been directed to focus upon. It's now OUR TURN to join the party (and YOURS to rejoin it).

Nebraska can absolutely be National Title-level good again, NIL is great for them, and I blame their fans not one bit for freaking out a bit after that loss.

If Matt Rhule can't get them there someone else will.
we are on our 6th coach in 30 years since Mackovic left . How many coaches is Nebraska on in the 25 years since Osborne retired ?

edit : Ruhle is 6th

welcome to the coaching search club

I will say, over the past several years, it really does seem that losing to us results in some program change for the opponent, whether it be firings, discontinuation, or rebuilds. It's really rather incredible.

byproduct of our very well earned (dominant?) doormat status. that the worm has turned is pretty flippin' sweet

Nebraska fired two sucessful coaches in search of a coach who could win national championships Solich averaged 10 wins per year. Pelini averaged 9.5 wins per year. Unless they hired Pete Carrill, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban or Kirby Smart they were not going to do any better.

Pete Carroll was hired after USC had fired 4 coaches in the prior 14 years. Kirby Smart was hired after Georgia had fired 3 coaches in the prior 20 years. Nick Saban was hired after Bama had fired 2 coaches, had two more abandon them for other jobs, and had one other resign under an NCAA cloud in the prior 18 years.

I do not believe in and do not participate in shaming fanbases for firing coaches. Ambitious and demanding fans are a benefit to a program, not a liability.

That said, Nebraska did screw up by panic-firing Solich, which the fans know now and a lot of them thought so even at the time.
