Illinois 31, Nebraska 24 OT Postgame

Maybe this will be considered piling on, but this hype about 400 sell-out crowds seems overblown to me (and irritating) because there haven’t been 400 consecutive sell-outs. At least that is what I read somewhere. There have been many games in the past that were not sell-outs but private businesses or corporations or maybe even wealthy individuals bought the unsold seats. To me, this may not be cheating but it seems pretty close. I hope that announcers point that out whenever they talk about Nebraska's sell-out streak.

I'd say that's still a sell out. But it was annoying nonetheless. Too bad they spoiled their gimmick on a loss

From the husker board. Been a long time since I’ve seen that from an opposing teams fans…refreshing!

Nothing much to add.

Great win. Team played well. QB in charge, great line play, fine running game, receivers who actually catch the ball, play calling, coaching. Fine kickers and special teams. Nice uniforms. All this in a hostile stadium full of loud and rabid Nebraska fans.

But please, no more taunting of and wagging finger at the poor Nebraska replacement kicker who missed the easy field goal. Bad form. Unsportsmanlike, cheap shot.

Beat Nittanies! Can do.

I'm reading a lot of Nebraska people saying the refs stole the game from them. The refs were not perfect, but things go both ways. The Nebraska player in OT still had one foot in bounds, and flopped like LeBron. The missed facemask at the end of the first half was a huge turning point that gave Nebraska 7 points. So spare me your tears.
Nebraska fan here, the refs did not steal the game. Missed calls sure, but that happens every game and usually both teams. Still have to make the plays to win and we had several opportunities.

Given your team breakdown last week, and general openness to discussion, if you stick around for general football discussion that wouldn't be a bad thing for this board.

You guys are going to be fine. You have a amazing fan base and love for your guys.

Husker fans don’t want to hear this... but it will take a bit more patience for the turnaround to take hold. You’ve already come a long way from where the program was under some very bad coaching choices after Doctor Tom left.

You’ve got some mojo back and fans are engaged again like they were years ago. And you have a future really-great QB to lead the way on the field.

No one will find a generally more respectful and fair fan base than that of the Illini and the Huskers.

Arkansas is a tough place to win and you have a fan base that expects a return to the Frank Broyles era. BB inherited a disaster and by year 2 had them very competitive. Sounds like he went off the rails personally late in his tenure which severely tarnished his reputation.

This comment feels accurate. Arkansas fans were riding high because Petrino had them living well beyond their means in 2010 + 2011 and everything turned for the program during that motorcycle accident. Bielema dug them out of a hole that was directly created from the Petrino fallout and had them competitive in year 2. Issue is Arkansas' abilities do not meet their expectations. Just look at Bielema's second year at Arkansas - they played games against #6 Auburn, #6 TAMU, #7 Alabama, #10 Georgia, #1 Mississippi State, #20 LSU, #8 Ole Miss, and #17 Missouri - that's insane.

The under-discussed component is Bielema seems to have learned from his experience in Fayetteville and Illinois and we as fans are benefitting from those lessons.

Speaking of Arkansas, I'm hoping they keep Pittman around for another year. Pittman has done an underrated job there and has a similar track record as Bielema in an SEC that's added Texas & Oklahoma (Pittman is currently 26-26 at Arkansas, Bielema was 29-34). I also want Arkansas to keep Pittman around for another year because I'm sure Lunney would at least have interest in a big paycheck to go home (again) as OC. If Illinois gets really hot and finishes 9-3, or 10-2(!)? He's probably on their head coaching list.

their 5 (and should have been 6) facemask personal fouls stole the game from them.

i honestly dont recall ever seeing that many in one game and the fact they couldn't eliminate it would leave me worried if i were a Husker-Du
1000 internets awarded for this reference! Well done.

Yeah as talented as Husker-Du is top to bottom. If they can’t show more focus and discipline, perhaps it’s time to entertain other possibilities and consider The Replacements.

Was away from the TV most of the night officiating a HS football game. Got to BW3 at the end of the night just in time for overtime. That defense played OUT OF THEIR MINDS in OT! What a great win! This is a team that is growing and is not afraid of their opponents. They won't win out, but this has the makings of a memorable season.

Illinois Football.

Graphic, violent, and with no remorse.

Have we entered a golden age in Illini athletics?
I was a fan as a child. Then was a very casual fan for awhile. Then had a stretch when I paid little or no attention. For some reason, around 2017 (maybe Malcolm on the basketball side and the recruiting wins of Beason and Isaiah on the football side, but I don’t know) I became FULLY invested. And all I could even hope for at the time (and I told my girlfriend then) was to MAKE the tournament in basketball (just “make” - the phrase “Elite 8” was not even considered) and be close enough to bowl eligibility that watching the last couple games of the season would have meaning (being ranked seemed as elusive as an E8 in b-ball).

Now, one Josh Whitman and a few years later, since football popped in 2022, here we are.

Relevancy is a beautiful thing. Now we need the football fan base to start filling up MS every game like we fill up SFC to give us a home field advantage and show recruits some electricity in the stadium.
