Illinois #18 in 12/12 AP Poll

i think that's fair to perhaps a bit overrated. we have some stuff to figure out in terms of gelling as a team maintaining intensity/focus, but the pieces are obviously there. i think we'll continue improving materially as the season progresses, but right now, we're definitely not a top 10 team.

Concur. I believe we’ve shown we can’t fight with the big dogs, even win a few rounds. Real question now is consistency. No need to punish this team for one bad loss. I could’ve also seen us dropping half a dozen spots tho, interesting to see how much the voters value a top win over a bad loss.

Exactly, and I think we all knew this already ... we were perhaps just expecting a different formula to get to where we are now - certainly not a loss to PSU at home. The lesson we learned Saturday is we are still a team that needs to bring it every Big Ten (or NCAAT) game, or we will lose. However, we can also beat the likes of Texas and UCLA and beat the likes of UVA if we keep improving.

Move forward!

I was wrong. We are still ranked after that disaster. I think BU press conference has a lot to do with that. Let’s see how we respond moving forward. ILL
I have been reluctant to watch it after Jeremy posted Underwood’s fart noise during the presser. I assumed it would make me cringe. Are you saying it was a great post game presser?

Shannon did defend underwood in a tweet yesterday.

So Purdue almost loses to Nebraska and move up to #1?? Makes a lot of sense 🙄
Thing is... almost losing is the exact same as winning if you're not talking about a bet and a point spread.
Kind of like where almost winning is still a loss and generally won't help you jump up the rankings.

Purdue, UVA, or UCONN. Take your pick. Purdue still won the game and that's really all that matters.

Not yet. I still think we have the potential to get there, but when the Penn State game began and the announcers said that they had five starting seniors I thought uh oh - if we have any kryptonite rn this is it. And so it went, not that I’m happy about it.

Yep. You have 3 unbeaten teams that have "proven it" against top level opponents. UCONN has been whipping everyone they've played, but only has one top 25 win so far. Tough to put them at the top. That leaves Virginia and Purdue. Both have eked out a couple close ones, but have come out with wins, even when they aren't firing on all cylinders.
From there it probably comes down to the hypothetical head-to-head... I think Virginia's style of play would fall right into what Purdue likes to do. Deliberate half-court basketball. Edey is the trump card in that type of matchup. It all looks about right to me.

Illini at 18 feels about right. Good enough to beat anyone if we play well but inconsistency and inexperience have been stumbling blocks.
