2018 Volleyball Schedule-

Rumor on the volleytalk forums is that two more players are transferring. "A real blow to our chances next year" according to someone who seems to have inside info. One of the transfers is likely Tyanna Omazic, who took the Illinois stuff off her Instagram bio. We already had two players transfer earlier this offseason, at this point you have to wonder if there's something going on.

I hope not. Omazic is clearly the middle blocker of the future. The other two MBs are seniors and Omazic came on really strong this past year.

Man, that's a big blow if true. They had a chance to be a Final Four caliber team next season. Why can't we have nice things?

Looks like it's pretty much a sure thing that she's transferring from what they're saying. Sucks because she had so much potential, but I still think we'll be very good next season. We bring back a solid group of players including two All-Americans.

Do we really have no incoming freshmen?

I'm pretty sure they have at least two freshman coming in - a very highly-regarded setter, a defensive specialist, and possibly one other player

That's just the spring roster. Freshmen will come in the summer. Two signed early, last fall. Not sure if anyone else is signing this spring.

I think they have at least one verbal so far in 2019 and 2020.

There is an up-to-date list of all volleyball commits at the bottom of this article:

Tough schedule but all games we can win. I like it.

For those not following closely, the major story lately has been Bruna Ana Vrankovic, a Croatian outside hitter who played professionally and may be playing for the Illini this season. Chose Illinois over Texas. There's some controversy as she was suspended from her pro league for doping and is looking to play in the NCAA in the meantime. However, she could potentially be a huge difference maker in our season. No official word yet from the Illini website that the NCAA cleared her, but she's living in Champaign and practicing with the team. I'll gladly take her if she's allowed to play.

I didn't think anyone that played professionally could play NCAA, assuming she was being paid.

Tamas wouldn’t have recruited her if there was no chance she’d be allowed to play. I don’t know anything about the situation but I heard something about her giving back the money she made in order to be able to play. No idea if that’s true.

Matic Vesel played professionally before he came to Illinois. Aleks Vukic played professionally while he was at Illinois. It must work in some instances.

In Europe, since they don't really have college athletics, playing on professional teams is their only option after high school. Some athletes play on professional teams but don't get paid. Also, if they don't make more than their expenses, they can keep their NCAA eligibility. Or they can pay back what they earned to regain their amateur status.

Of course, who knows what the NCAA will decide on any specific eligibility issue -- especially when Illinois is concerned :noidea:

We'll miss some of the things Omazic was able to do for us no doubt, she was going to be real good here for her whole career, but at least we were able to find a quality transfer to fill the void and help with depth (if not join the rotation). The only other transfer that was part of the rotation was Gereau and I sort of got the sense that she was hoping to get the Libero spot whenever Brandi got hurt last year, and when they gave that spot to Morgan instead of her it felt like the last straw to me. No inside information, just what I perceived from my view from my season tickets near the bench. The other 2 transfers didn't have a clear path to meaningful playing time until 2019 at the earliest. I'm excited for this season to get started and see what we can do with most of the roster returning and a year older!

Nice road win at #25 Colorado State in front of a huge crowd. Illini dominated the first two sets (party due to lots of CSU errors) before dropping the next two and winning the fifth.
