I sort’ve like the game time for the Kansas game as the weather should be perfect.

Why has momentum to move the students stalled?? Bret mentioned it as potentially in the works almost three years ago now. I think that would go a LONG way to improving our gameday atmosphere.
The students would have to show up first and the only way that happens presently it to win

My guess is we won't be seeing any changes until there are major renovations to the ESL and SEZ. They can't displace season ticket holders until there is a good place to put them. I think some time in the back half of the decade they announce a Memorial Stadium renovation plan where Phase 1 is ESL modernization, and then phase/s 2/3 involve a new SEZ structure to replace the horseshoe and a reimagining of the NEZ stands. Part of the plan will then be to move the students down to the NE corner when they start working on the NEZ, but yeah that is what my guess of the order of steps.

Student attendance isn't on par with elite programs, but it has actually regularly been better (as a percent full) than the rest of the stadium over Bielema's time here. We have had multiple games where the student section was over 90% full, and then the upper deck is about 30% full. I would argue they are doing their part, and they deserve to be as close to the field as literally every other Big Ten student section except for ours.

I get what you're saying, but I have three main complaints with this approach, assuming it is what the DIA has in mind.

1. We used to have the students in East Main ... so in the modern era, when we had significantly more season ticket holders than we had now, we seemed to make it work!

2. The NEZ seats are actually great seats ... just not for the students. While this setup removes students from "the thick of it" and reduces the amount of noise they are allowed to contribute...

... it is actually quite a nice, elevated view for a family of four or older fans looking for a more relaxing, low key gameday experience. It is hardly a punishment to move fans there, IMO, and you could make the argument these are significantly better seats than anywhere in the Horseshoe or even the corners of East and West Main. So, it seems like a win-win to get some families in this (still nice and new) space and move the students closer to the field.

3. We don't even have to displace ONLY Illini fans! It is ridiculous that we give visiting fans a relatively close location in the corner of East Main and the Horseshoe ... move the students where the visiting fans currently are, allowing them to be much, much, closer to the action, and allow season ticket holders in that area, the East Balcony and any seats underneath the overhang the option to move to the NEZ. I think many would think it is an upgrade. If it were up to me, I would move the visiting fans to the far upper corner of the East Balcony and make sections 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112 and 113 the student section. Allow them to overflow into 207, 208 and 209 if tickets are selling:

As a student in the late 80s, I sat in the East balcony with my student seats (sat in Block I in 1986) and they were awesome seats. However, the capacity of the place was 75k-ish back then. What's the capacity these days? That's probably why students don't sit on the east side of the stadium.

Totally agree with the visitor seats. Nearly every other stadium ships them to the upper decks while we give them a prime location to be loud and annoying. Can’t believe it has lasted this long.

It seems like with the announcement this morning, they do plan to displace season ticket holders.

Sitting in the horseshoe for that awful Purdue game in '22 (#justiceforspoon) all I could hear was their band and fans.
The horseshoe needs to be much closer to the field and reshaped into a more vertical stand. It's embarrassing how MAC-like it looks with all the empty space, even with the running track long gone

If I recall correctly, it looked like a bunch of accumulated junk was stored under there.
