I mentioned it after the Maryland game and I will bring it up in the middle of today's game. College basketball is all about guard play, ESPECIALLY on the road. They get the offense set up, they control tempo....Everything flows. This doesn't even take into consideration the big shot taker/maker aspect of having quality guards. On the defensive side...If you lack good, solid backcourt play, it's a killer. Consistently getting broken down on the dribble drive, allowing easy interior feeds, etc.....Creates complete defensive breakdowns.
Look at our guards tonight and pretty much all year against good competition. Less games where we shot out of our minds from three(Michigan), it's been bad, most notably on the road. Turnovers, poor shot selection, shots late in the shot clock, unable to break a press(West Virginia), defensive breakdowns allowing for layups or uncontested threes......
JCL, Tate, Abrams, Lucas....I would say JCL is a specialist, at best, Tate and Abrams wouldn't be starting for anybody but Rutgers(and us) and the jury is still out on Lucas.
So, I put this more on Groce's recruiting than coaching. I suspect they'd look different with Snider or Evans on the floor. I'll never bash a student athlete, but at some point you do have to recognize a talent deficiency at some positions. Right now, Black and Hill would start on most Big Ten teams....Outside of that, it's a NIT(maybe) roster.
