At minimum you have someone who is pretty talented to work against in practice. He isn’t a threat to take anyone’s minutes, and I can’t imagine his NIL deal amounts to much more than a U of I education and top notch coaching and facilities.

I think the nuance is that he played in 2019-20, a season that did not end with a championship. Waivers for a 5th year have been granted on those grounds. In short, he only had 3 chances to win a title.

I think you’d be foolish to play him at the 5 at that level anyway. He’s a stretch 4. There aren’t many power centers in the NBA that are offensive focal points. Joker & Embiid…but no one is guarding those guys effectively One on one.

It blows my mind that people continue to poo poo mid major players, especially after our experience with Marcus last year. His ppg average dropped a whopping 0.8 after moving to the B1G. People way underestimate what having better teammates does for your scoring opportunities.

I think it clear if Watkins want to take our bag, it's his. If not, we have other options to explore to make good use of those funds. Brad is saying only one more because he's hoping its Watkins.

No doubt, a valid point. I also have no doubt the staff would rather get Watkins. However, folks thinking landing Lathon would be a massive recruiting failure is just plain wrong. He's a grown man and, as we saw firsthand, can make shots against anybody.
