It's not just Walmart family, it's other boosters as well. Their football practice facility is named for my cousin who is a self-made wealthy hedge fund manager.

They have done a better job at cultivating wealthy donors to invest in their football program or that is what it seems like to me. I see pics all the time from my cousin and his family (he & wife went to Mizzou) w/ Drinkwitz (he visits their house, brings gifts to his kids, etc.).
I have been wondering for a long time why the Tigers named their practice facility the McCringleberry Performance Center. It all makes sense now!

Many people, including many filthy rich people, just don't care about sports.
I understand that may be difficult for us crazies here to understand. šŸ˜
DIA did studies back around 2019 that showed incoming students had little to no interest in sports as compared to academics. Not sure how far this can be walked back but, it seems that UIUC has built up a large alumni base that is not interested in dontaing to athletics versus other aspects of the university.

It's all about what attitudes the students have as undergrads and if those attitudes continue as they get older and make more money.

Has this ship sailed with the Hunt commitment? Not sure if the staff wants a second d-lineman or not. I like Hunt but he has little positional flexibility.
I wouldn't think that ship has sailed, but who knows. We lost 5 of our top 6 DL from last year. Subtracting Johnson, we've brought in 3 transfers thus far. I know Bray and maybe another incumbent will get some play, but I would think we'd want 1 more DL brought in. Nobody we have will be playing a Johnny Newton percentage of snaps, so there should be playing time available.
Based on the other schools listed as being interested in him, I would guess Hunt is more of a rotational piece, but maybe he'll end up an outstanding eval by the staff like Daxon was last season.

do we have an idea who he is referring to ?
It has to do with the Gentle Hunt recruitment. Bret retweeted Hunt's commitment tweet just before posting this, he was probably busy the last few days and just got around to it.

This is absurd!

Let's poll our Illinois Loyalty readership, whom I view as representative of the broader student/alumni population. I would expect 98% to 99% of us prioritize Illini sports.

We stress the academics to a higher degree because we excel at them, and therefore attract those type people to come here. We are #35 in US news while Mizzou is #124.. We're more like the Ivys and near Ivys, and they don't stress sports. Mizzou will have an easier time being known for athletics than a top academic institution, and they are not attracting the same student that cares about academics to the same level as UofI.

Of course we would love to be good at both.

I'm starting to wonder if the new commit is someone totally different from what we think?

Speaking of being good at both......................

Just a little something looking back at the UofI campus environment I was able to enjoy (I'll use the 1983-1984 school year):

#5 -- College of Engineering Ranking for Undergraduate Programs (US News & World Report)
#1 -- College of Accountancy Ranking for Undergraduate Programs (US News & World Report)
#6 -- Illini Men's Basketball Ranking (Final AP Poll)
#5 -- Illini Football Ranking (Final AP Regular Season Poll)

Yeah, I was lucky to be there for both the flying Illini and Jeff George citrus bowl year. Some good times at both assembly hall and memorial stadium.

Mizzou is trying to get better at academics. How do I know this? Well, they hired an Illini alum to run the school. Mizzou President Mun Y. Choi earned his bachelorā€™s degree in General Engineering from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. Just like when Northwestern hired Illini alum Jim Phillips to turn around its' athletics fortunes, if you want to succeed in sports, academics or business, you hire an Illini grad.
